In The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger there were alot of themes in fact, i chose growing up , and in addition to i will be specifically focusing on Holden Caulfied .Holden is the narrator and the protagonist of the novel. He 16 and got kicked out of high school. Holden was expelled from failing at Pency Prep . He is resentful of the adult world and doesn’t ever want to grow up . He likes places that stay the same for years . Holden’s childhood is the reason why he is afraid to grow up. He only matures very little and very slowly as the book goes on. However even know Holden is afraid to go up there is a reason behind it all. The reason Holden is afraid to grow up is because when he was eight his brother Allie died of leukemia when he was six. Therefore this hit Holden very hard. Holden did not take it well. After this all happened, that night Holden broke all the windows in his garage with his bare fist. In addition to ,Holden was hospitalized for his injuries. …show more content…

He is afraid of growing up and him struggling as he gets older it’s almost like he scared, he wants to keep his same childhood qualities for the rest of his life he doesn’t want to lose them as he grows up and learns new things. Also in chapter 16 Holden says that” curtain things should stay the same way , you ought to be able to stick to them in one of those big classes and leave them alone “
