Throughout the book Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte generated suspense by using secrets in the story such as the eerie mistress in the inner room and the discovered letter Jane received from her uncle who was thought to be dead. Upon entering Thornfield Hall, Jane Eyre observed unusual occurrences in the household that sparked the reader’s attention to the secrets of some of the attendants. After an incident resulted in Mr. Rochester’s room catching on fire, he convinced Jane that the person behind the outburst was Grace Poole. What Edward Rochester failed to indicate was that Grace was not responsible for the mishap that day, but that she was only a seamstress and played a little part in the events of that evening. She reflected back on her distant family often through the story and kept in little contact with her cousin Bessie. The discovery of Jane’s uncle played a dramatic part in the turning of the story. Jane had thought that the majority of her family to be deceased, but when she returns to Gateshead to visit her dying aunt, she read a letter from her Uncle John. Although one might think she would have visited her uncle, Jane never sought after him. After the death of her Aunt Reed, Jane went back to Thornfield, but the character continued to play an important role in the story. At the end of the book, Jane’s uncle died, but left his inheritance to Jane which played a part in the “happily ever after” of the story when Jane and Mr. Rochester married and the inheritance received by Jane was used to set their life for the
