Character Analysis Amir, from The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a very unique character, that undergoes many changes in his personality, and the way he views things. In the beginning of the story, he always wanted to please his father, and would stop at nothing to accomplish this. Amir’s change from a boy to a man was in response to a series of events in the story, which are very riveting and moving. Therefore, Amir realizes what his father really expected from him, and he behaved like the way that his father had always wanted him to act. Amir’s character was sculpted into a masterpiece of a personality that was shown throughout his growing up, and the radical events he was put through. In Afghanistan, Amir lived in a community of people that had a high level of social class, the Pashtun. They were given right over the Hazaras, or the lower ranking people of their community. However, this social class difference was no problem for Amir and his best friend Hassan. Hassan was a Hazara, and everyone except Amir treated him like the city scum. They had to leave their home because the Taliban took over their city. Leaving his life behind, all he took with him to Pakistan, and later to California, were the clothes on his back. On their way to Pakistan, one of the border guards said they would not let the group pass unless he had a half hour alone with a woman in their group. Risking his life, Amir’s father stood up and did not let that happen, despite Amir pulling on his father’s leg warning him not to do it. Baba’s response was something that changed Amir for the rest of his life. When Amir pulled on his leg, Baba snapped at Amir saying “Haven’t I taught you anything?” after slapping Amir’s hand away.
