1 Life in America for Baba and Amir is much different than their life in Afghanistan. Specifically, Amir adapts well to America. He completes high school and college. Furthermore, he follows his dream of becoming a writer. In American Amir becomes a young man who marries Soraya. The reader witnesses a kinder, non-vindictive Amir. In American Baba is a gas attendant who works long hours. He does not receive the recognition and praise he once did in Afghanistan and this is hard for Baba. There are many parallels between the first half of Amir’s life and the second half. Specifically, Hassan runs the blue kite for Amir during their adolescence and later Amir runs the kite for Sohrab. Moreover, Hassan says to Amir, “for you a thousand times over” (71) and later Amir says this exact phrase to Sohrab. Another parallel that may be seen with Amir, Hassan and Sohrab is the story of the Persian hero, Rostman and Sohrab. At the beginning of the story, Amir reads the prose to Hassan and later, Amir reads the story to Sohrab when he is in the hospital. Another parallel that may be seen in The Kite Runner is Amir puts his birthday money and watch underneath Hassan’s mattress so that Hassan would have to leave. Meanwhile, later in the book, Hassan gives his watch to Fahid’s boys and places money under their mattress for food. In addition, Assef raped Hassan at the beginning of the novel and later presumably rapes or sexually abuses Sohrab. Assef’s rape of Sohrab may be inferred when Sohrab says to Amir, “I’m so dirty and full of sin..they did things…the bad man and the other two…they did things…did things to me”
