Becoming rich and famous is everyone's dream. Sadly, once you become rich and famous it’s very easy to fall back down to rock bottom. Things Fall Apart tells the story of a man named Okonkwo’s devastating end when the Europeans come to imperialize Africa. In the beginning, Okonkwo has become a lord of his clan until he gets kicked out by a series of disobeying the Igbo law and religion. When he comes back to his clan seven years later, the white people have invaded and changed everything. In the story, the Europeans changed the Igbo’s culture and transformed it to be similar to theirs.
Throughout Things Fall Apart the government of the Igbo culture start changing to become more like the European culture when the white people imperialized Africa. In the beginning, when the tribe didn’t come into contact with the Europeans their government was based around the elders and Oracles judgement. A big goal of the missionaries is to convert the Igbo people to christianity. During when they were isolated and by themselves, the Igbo people had their own religion. In the book the Oracle said, “We live in peace with our fellows to honor our great goddess of the earth without whose blessing our crops will not grow(30).” The Igbo people praised many different gods and goddesses based on nature and the world. They also had wooden carvings dedicated to the gods and praised the spirits that were inside of the carvings. In the end of the book, the clan was deciding whether to attack the clan or not. A speaker came up and said “If we fight the strangers we shall hit our brothers and perhaps shed the blood of a clansman(203).” Some of the Igbo people had already joined the side and religion of the missionaries and now are practicing Christianity.
