The Zhou Dynasty The Zhou Dynasty rose to power in China in 1050 B.C.E. and was the longest ruling dynasty in its history. Though the Zhou Dynasty was never a wholly unified realm, it did manage to implement a single form of government throughout China. This can best be described as a decentralized feudal system run by relatives (to the king) and trusted vassals. Aristocracy and patrilineal family ties were important during the Zhou dynasty. Much of what is known about daily life during the Zhou dynasty was found in the Book of Songs-it offers a glimpse into daily life for people of various social standings. It stated that the king was given a mandate from Heaven to rule only as long as he rules in the interest of the people. The Zhou claimed that the last Shang king was irresponsible and cruel so Heaven took his mandate away. Whether it was a ploy to win over the conquered peoples or simply part of the Zhou ideology, this theory has been has continued to be a key player in Chinese political beliefs. In addition to the Mandate of Heaven, the Zhou rulers consolidated their power by placing relatives and other loyal followers in charge the states which had been conquered. This resulted in a much closer knit political system. These states and positions were passed down patrilineally. Within a few generations, this had led the Zhou kingdom to be divided into over two hundred of these principalities. These in turn were subdivided into “fiefs”, distributed out by the princes to their own relatives and followers. This resulted in a hierarchy of princes and lord, in which the princes held their territories from the Zhou king in exchange for their loyalty and support, and subordinate lords held their fiefs from the princes, also in exchange for loyalty and support. Though not technically slaves, the peasants that farmed this land were controlled by the lords.
