In 1947, Stalin made promises to set up a government in Poland made up of both communists and non communists in order to create a joint government. Instead, he arrested thousands of non communists, allowing the communists to be voted into power, spreading communism to Poland. Two months after, the Truman Doctrine was announced in order to try and halt the spread of Communism within Europe. The policy of containment was a policy that also tried to limit the spread of Communism within Europe and Asia.
