Have you ever loved something so much that it’s hard for you to put it down or stop using it? Usually kids get something like toys for christmas or on their 5th birthday. Well when I turn 5 I got my first basketball, and boy was I happy. I would take it with me everywhere. Dribble it around the house, take it to school with me, I even slept with it at times, literally everywhere. I fell in love with it so much that I just couldn’t put it down. My parents eventually took notice and then sat down and had a serious talk with me that would help to shape the rest of my life and make me the person I am today.

It’s just apart of who I am and my competitive nature. I don’t care at all if you’re a friend of mine or a loved one and I'm playing against you, I am going for your head. I show no mercy, this game is my life. I take this approach whenever I am on the court simply because of the fact that no one else is going to get you a college scholarship, you have to go out and get it yourself. This requires hard work and dedication to the game. You can’t take ANY days off because the days that you chose to take off, someone else at the same time is working hard in the gym or in the weight room trying to get better. Even when you’re in the gym or weight room improving, you’ve gotta work as hard as you can. Because there is always someone in the world working as hard as you are. If they're not working as hard as you then they’re probably working even harder. I try to use the same approach in life as well.
The game of basketball can be applied to almost anything in life. For example, if you love the game like I do you’d have an amazing work ethic. You would want to take advantage of any opportunity given to get better at the game, right? Well this can also be applied to your school work and how hard you work on assignments. Everyone has a special event that determines our life journey. This event can give us identity, happiness or even pain and sadness. The special event that changed my life was deciding to play basketball because basketball helped me find peace, happiness and gave me identity. When I was ten years old my grandfather succumbed to cancer. His death created hatred inside of me.

This have help people of all ages get through their burdens and do something they love instead of doing some negative. For many people basketball has become more than a game, it’s the way of life. Growing up I was undoubtedly obsessed with Toy Story. The movie was my absolute favorite and I would watch it upwards of four times a week. Words were not my strong suit, and the only words I could say were Buzz and ball. Buzz Lightyear was by far my favorite character, so I had a massive collection of Buzz toys. My favorites were: Buzz Lightyear basketball hoop, Buzz Lightyear flashlight, and of course Buzz Lightyear himself. Clearly, I was obsessed with Buzz Lightyear, but my entire life was about to change.

Raised in a small town of 750 people, where high school sports meant everything, sport has played a tremendous role in my life. Basketballs and footballs replaced stuffed animals in cribs, and dribbling a basketball came before learning to ride a bike. I started playing basketball in the second grade, and I hated it. We always played in the division above us and we hardly ever won a game, but after watching Coach Summitt and the Tennessee Lady Volunteers win back to back National Championships, the same years my high school girls basketball team won back to back State Championships, I fell in love with the game. “The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.
When the season started, I dedicated myself to my conditioning and practices. I became a profound basketball player, my life revolved around this sport. I have throughout my whole life been playing sports. I still play basketball competitively and now it’s at the university level. Basketball though was not my first love when it came to playing sports. It has though become my true focus since junior high school. Coming from Canada everybody plays hockey. Its almost as if as soon as you learn to walk you learn how to skate. Whether it is at the recreation centre or at the shinny rink around the corner everyone plays. Eventually I abandoned hockey to play basketball which I have done so for the last twelve years of my life and hopefully a few more years into the future.
I never had anyone to play with when I was young. My friend was a Tv, who would inspire me to do stupid things. It taught me to do extreme actions that adults wouldn’t do. The house that I lived in was on top of a rocky hill. It was surrounded by big trees that would allow me to perform amazing stunts.
When you look at a basketball what do you see? Most would see an orange, sphere, shaped rubber ball. There are black lines and real leather. If you look closer, you would even see the size of the ball in which you are playing with. A basketball could be just a toy for many, or even represent a release for others, but for me, it means a lot more. A basketball represents my blood, sweat, tears, passion, sacrifice, and most of all, a sense of belonging, like a family. At this moment in my life, there are only three things I devote my life to- family, friends, and basketball. Basketball has shaped my life probably more than anything else. Basketball has instilled in me a vicious will to achieve and embrace my ambitions instead of fearing them. Basketball gave me an open opportunity to try something new. New opportunities and experiences are not such a big deal anymore. From academics to personal matters, the lessons that I have learned from basketball has impacted my life.
Basketball seems to get into your blood. It is said by those who play, "You eat, you sleep and you play basketball." When I was a little girl all I wanted to be was a professional basketball player. I couldn't count how many times I pounded that dumb ball in our driveway until it was too dark to see, then I would play for hours more by the porch light. Now I realize that was only childish insanity. Back then they didn’t even have a girls’ profession basketball league in the states. However, that didn't stop me from walking away empty handed. One thing I learned was how to prepare oneself for life. Well, at least, how to prepare oneself for a game.
To me, life is a basketball court. The world in my mind is a hoop, a basketball, a court, and rules. That’s why, it’s my passion, and it makes a great comparison to my life. In life, people say you can be successful without any effort from yourself, an average person living peacefully, or a guy that has tried so hard, but made it so late. Just like basketball. You make hoops to be successful; you defend when you meet an opponent. You pass commonly to have someone support you or reach out a helping hand. Those supportive people are most of the time, your family members, but also your friends for life. You dribble to keep up and to make it to success, while you make sure you don’t travel, or double-dribble. These are violations that are like the cheats of your life. When discussing the physical impact basketball has had on my life, I will not hesitate to state that, I used to be overweight, but now I have a normal weight. Due to the vigorous exercises we did during the game, I was able to develop physical fitness and better shape. I understood what my body could do and had been able to maintain this ability. Therefore, establishing a lifelong habit for good health.
Some of the reasons I love basketball are because it is challenging, helps me improve myself as a person, and teaches me a lot about life. If you were to ask my friends what I love to do, my guess is that the majority of them would come up with this reply, "He loves to play sports". Sports are a big part of my life, and if I had to choose my favorite sport to play it would have to be basketball. I couldn't imagine going a week without being able to touch a basketball, and I thought I would never have to. But on one summer afternoon, that all changed when I broke my leg. It left me on crutches for two months, and not being able to play basketball all that summer. At first I thought it wouldn't be so bad, getting all the attention and sympathy from everyone. However, after one game I soon realized that I would do just about anything to get rid of those horrible crutches and get back on the court.
