The Great Gatsby is a novel about a love between a man and a woman who desire to be together, but have trouble along the way when trying to achieve the love they wish to share. The story takes place during the roaring twenties, in the summer of 1922. Although events happen over the course of just a course of a few months, the memories will forever resonate with those who experienced them, even after they are long gone. F.Scott Fitzgerald’s influence for writing the Great Gatsby has a lot to do with the fact he himself grew up during the era of the roaring twenties. Some of his influences for writing the Great Gatsby include: Princeton university, which he only attended a short while and ended up dropping out to join the military. Another was his wife, Zelda who later grew mentally ill and had several breakdowns and had to be resorted to several hospitals. Alcohol and depression also came into play for Fitzgerald, as he had always struggled with alcohol for many years. Finally, wealth was a huge influence as well, as Fitzgerald had been very successful in his writing, which brought him a generous amount of wealth. The way Fitzgerald’s life came along was similar to that of many characters in his novel. Nick Carraway, Daisy and Gatsby, along with what was popular at the time are all factors that are similar to Fitzgerald’s life story. …show more content…

The roaring twenties was a considered to be the aftermath of world war one, as a way of bringing the nation back together in the way of rebellion. Many new ideas were introduced during this time period. For example: jazz music became very popular, women challenged their role in society by fighting their way through suffrage and prohibition was emphasized. Prohibition made alcohol distribution illegal, therefore speakeasies were created, which were a secret club that those who wished to drink could sneak and do so.
