When people think of the 1920s they think of the great depression. What people don’t know is that twenties were much more than the depression. The 1920s were one of Americas most prosperous eras. This era brought peace, new technology, inventions, new dances, flappers, entertainment, prohibition and much more. The twenties have been described in many ways including the Roaring Twenties, the Jazz age and the era of wonderful nonsense. The name that best illustrates this time period is the era of wonderful nonsense because the crazy fads.
The twenties were a time of excitement, World War I had just ended and it was hard for everyone to settle down. After being away from home for such a long time, Coming back and returning to the usual routine seemed too sedate. Young women and men set the stage for an unforgettable party era which was full of new and exciting experience. Some of these new ideas lasted and other and others were just fads that faded or became less popular.
A fad is a trend that becomes poplar for a brief period of time. The Era of the wonderful nonsense was full of fads. There fads in almost everything and some fads you would never believe. Fads of the 1920s were unpredictable. Some were normal but other were outrageous and unusual. People became very involved with fads and some even became hobbies. There were styles fads, dace fads, game fads and random fads.

Before World War I woman were referred to as Gibson Girls. Gibson girls were the exact opposite of the woman in the 1920. Gibson Girls would were their hair long and lose. It was a period of “amazing vitality, of social invention and change” (George E.Mowry 1963 p1). “The Roaring 20s was an era when young adults seemed to have a curiosity about life and a defiance of death that made their elders shakes their heads. This was an era when people were testing the limits of achiness and human endurance” (Cincinnati post 1997). The youth embraced “the wild, new, and the forbidden” (Sara and tom Pendergast, 1990)
The roaring twenties were full of great invention, jazz and the fads. Everyone could find an interest in the twenties especially in the fads. Each fad made this decade one of kind. Without the fads this era would not have had the impact it did on the American history. This was a wonderful time in the American history but it also short lived and the great depression and WWI were just the corner and soon to come.
