Throughout human history, horrendous crimes have always captivated audiences around the world. But, in recent decades with the invention of television, people can watch adaptations of ‘real’ or fictional crimes. Although In Cold Blood is considered the first true crime novel, our obsession with true crime began around the 19th century with news articles and books about gruesome murders which later became the basis for many TV shows and films that we watch today.

In the 19th century, the invention of the printing press gave people easier access to information about the murders and the investigation into who committed the crimes. That’s why In Cold Blood was so successful because it was different from other true crime novels where people automatically hate the criminal without knowing the criminal(s)’s background. Truman Capote made readers sympathize with Perry Smith, one of the two killers, by telling us about the killer’s background and personality. During the trial at the end of the novel, we learn that Perry was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. Jack De Bellis states that Capote altered times, directions, and places throughout the “non-fiction novel” (De Bellis 523). De Bellis also claims that Capote altered facts about the characters of the book, mostly Perry. He suggests that Capote altered some facts about the characters to help build characterization. We automatically assume that the killers are bad, yet once we read part two of In Cold Blood we realize that the killers have a background that shaped them into who they were in the story. The victims, the Clutter Family, were depicted as the perfect “All-American Family” who were loved by the entire community, while the criminals are depicted as mentally unstable.
