When I first received the news that I was placed into an honors math class, I was frightened. I questioned my intelligence and my sense of self-worth. The first few weeks I often asked myself, “do I belong here.” However another part of me felt honored and motivated to prove that my teachers were correct in placing me into an honors course. Eventually my dedication and work ethic lead me to be placed in multiple honors and AP classes later in my academic career. I don’t plan to stop attending honors courses at UIC. I want to go beyond the rudimentary understanding of subjects and understand the backstory, the potential, or the depth of ideas. In the UIC honors courses, I hope to be taught principles to live a more informed life, just like in my high school. Being in multiple honors courses has also allowed me to be in a motivated and overall positive environment. Usually in the basic courses, there are a significant number of students who are slackers or pessimistic. However, in an honors course, almost all the students are hard working and supportive. Whenever I needed help solving a physics problem or had writer’s block, I could always count on a fellow student to help me shed new light on my dilemma. Having classmates that are just as motivated to succeed as I am is one of the great benefits of being in an honors college. My family has taught me that it’s a terrible characteristic to take but not to give. So in return for the many benefits I receive from the honors college, I will contribute my ability to cooperate well with others. For example, my Spanish class started a fundraiser to help Ecuador recover from a massive earthquake. Together as a team, we initiated and executed ideas that we brainstormed as a
