Contemporary migration trends in the United States of America indicate that a large number of Honduran citizens are fleeing their home nation and coming to the U.S. in hopes of a better future. The staggering number of Honduran migrants departing their nation begs the question: what is causing this massive migration? In order to understand the migration of Honduran immigrants, a comprehensive timeline outlining the complex events that have led to this phenomenon must be delineated. This report analyzes Honduras’ history through key political, economic, and social events in chronological order to fully create an outline that explains current Honduran migration.
Honduras, a nation of roughly 8 million citizens, is situated in Central America with Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua bordering it. Roughly 90% of its citizenry is of mestizo descent, or mixed Hispanic and Native American ethnicity (Reichman, 2013). However, as previously stated, many of these citizens are escaping the nation in large numbers due to harsh living conditions in the nation.

According to the Pew Research Center, since 1990 the Honduran origin population jumped from 127,000 to 791,000 in 2013. Also according to the Research Center, placed in context of the total Latino population, Hondurans compromise the eighth-largest group of Hispanic origin or 1.5% of the U.S. Hispanic population (Lopez, 2015). These numbers continue to grow. In the following portions of this policy briefing, the current challenges faced by Honduran immigrants will be delineated and analyzed in order to suggest future policy changes that fully address and amend these
