Homelessness in Canada Homelessness is a significant topic that Canada has been dealing with for decades. People who are homelessness all are homeless due to many different circumstances. Canada’s government has been working with an ongoing investigation to end homeliness.

Homelessness in Canada has been growing since the 80s doubling every decade. Currently in Canada there is 30,000 homeless people a night. In total per year 200,000 Canadians experience homelessness every year. Usually when people think of homelessness they think of someone living in the streets. 7 billion dollars was invested into homelessness in 2013 total. This goes into running shelters, providing social services and health care. Currently there is long going investments in affordable housing to keep homeless at a minimum. Housing and shelters have become the key aspect to reducing homelessness in Canada. A lot of times shelters aren't always being used for the homeless but people who are runaways will use them. Canada’s government made more strict policies to who they let into shelters to resolve that issue. Various homeless strategies have been applied to many provinces across Canada. These include Alberta, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario and Quebec. The provinces all do things differently to help the homeless. Alberta announced a 10 year plan to end homelessness and have seen a 16% reduction in homelessness since the start. The government uses tax money to create homeless shelters. So if they reduce tax, it will make it harder to create more shelters for the homeless. The government and leaders in homeless communities need affordable housing prices to go down before homelessness is significantly reduced. Toronto has seen a decline in homelessness from city
Youth homelessness in Ontario is not a new phenomenon, it has become more and more severe over the past 20 years. “One third of homeless individuals on the streets are under the age of 25”(Cino, Rose). It is a significant social justice issue in Canada. Within our community people are increasingly aware of the sight of youth sleeping in parks, asking for money and sitting on sidewalks. Youth homelessness in Ontario is primarily caused by tragic life occurrences such as abuse, illness or unemployment.
Firstly, there are currently over 105,000 homeless people in Australia, and I think we can do better than that. Out of every five people who seek emergency help, one is being turned away from vital services. Homelessness is becoming a bigger and bigger problem each year for Australia with a 3.4% growth annually.

According to Lee Tunstall, homelessness is a social problem that “has been growing since the 1970’s” (2009, para.1) and has caught the attention of both the Canadian government and the general public (Tunstall, 2009) . Predominantly, the homeless are individuals or families with no permanent residence who also lack the resources or abilities necessary to arrange for their own adequate housing and living (Stearman, 2010). This matter affects a diverse demographic of the Canadian public. In 2003, the Toronto report card on housing and homelessness reported that out of 32,000 people who used homeless shelters, 15% were families, 22% were youths between the ages of fifteen and twenty-four, 18% were single women and 48% were single men (2003).

It is important to realize that homelessness is usually not by choice, but a condition that occurs when the recourse needed for individuals or -6- groups of people (i.e. families) to be able to live in homes of their own are limited or in some cases even non-existent. Homelessness in most case is the result of poverty and unemployment or low income jobs. There are also other cases which contribute to the homeless population. Homelessness is a devastating issue to deal with especially for familles. It has many effects on every member, effects that could possibly be scarring for life. It is incredibly hard to find Canadian statistics on the homeless. On the other hand, it is unbelievably easy to find statistics on the United States homeless. Our problem, although smaller than in the US , is not on such a small scale that it should be so vaguely imposed.
The homeless population is growing in America. There are more and more Americans living in boxes, sleeping on park benches and panhandling on the streets each day. These people tend to make us, the non-homeless, feel uncomfortable and unsafe. They are also placing increasing stress on the nation's economy. In short, the homeless are a burden on the rest of society. There needs to be action taken against them. "I shall now humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be liable to the least objection (Swift.)" I propose that all of the homeless be relocated to foreign third world countries. They can then be hired in American factories producing shoes, automobiles and other various goods at less than one dollar per hour.
Homelessness in the United States has been an important subject that the government needs to turn its attention to. There has been announced in the news that the number of the homeless people in many major cities in the United States has been increasing enormously. According to United States Interagency Council on Homelessness reported that there was an estimation of 83,170 individuals have experienced chronic homelessness on the streets of the United States’ streets and shelters on only a single night of January 2015, which is a small decrease of only 1% from the previous year (People Experiencing Chronic Homelessness, n.d.). If you do not already know what homelessness means, it is someone who is not able to live in a stable residence because of financial or psychological problems, so they are forced to live on the streets or put themselves on the streets, because they feel it would be a better fit. Homelessness in Canada is a very large and concerning issue because of the growing population.
As a result of anti-poverty legislation being placed into effect all over the country to force workers back into the capitalist labour market, which has taken hold in neoliberalism, the number of families finding themselves on the brink of homeless is skyrocketing. Furthermore, with the reduction of social assistance programs these families are barely able to provide for themselves, therefore, numerous children are being physically impacted by homelessness. According to Jenny Hsu (2015) hunger and physical illness are effects children and youth may experience due to homelessness that greatly affect their development which is unacceptable for our government to allow this many young people to be negatively impacted. Homelessness is caused by a wide range of things including financial issues. The life of a homeless person is hard and comes with set-backs and the constant need to overcome them. Homeless people go through many challenges in surviving without a home. They can suffer from health issues, hunger, and poor emotional well-being.
This great nation of awesome power and abundant resources is losing the battle against homelessness. The casualties can be seen on the street corners of every city in American holding an ?I will work for food? sign. Homeless shelters and rescue missions are at full capacity. There is no room at the inn for the nation?s indigent. Anyone who has studied this issue understands that homelessness is a complex problem. Communities continue to struggle with this socio-economic problem while attempting to understand its causes and implement solutions. The public and private sectors of this country are making a difference in the lives of the homeless by addressing the issues of housing, poverty and education.
Many people debate on weather homeless people should receive guidance or just be abandoned. Do homeless people deserve our service and to be supported, or are they just lazy individuals trying to take advantage of people? Homelessness is a growing dispute in cities. It has became an extensive problem for the community. Homelessness can not and should not be ignored. The number of homeless people in the United States is quickly growing. Homelessness is a vast predicament in America and around the world. It is severely overlooked as people don’t really think of homelessness as real world problem. However, there have been ways that people have tried to fix the problem. They have come up with homeless shelters, emergency shelters, food banks and soup kitchens. These solutions have limitations though, which will hopefully come to an end.
