Since the early 1980s, during the Reagan administration, politics have been majorly influenced by Hollywood. While Reagan was an actor himself, since then, celebrities have used the constant attention from the media and public and their own influence to speak out about what they stand for. The most recent examples have been the undeniable presence of Hollywood in the latest election. Whether it be the Oscars or the Super Bowl, the country has been on the edge of their seats, anticipating a political stunt by a celebrity in the spotlight. One of the most debated topics of the latest election and the newest presidential administration is, how much influence should Hollywood have in politics? The Oscars, watched by millions of people annually, are the pinnacle of the award season for film actors and have become a platform for those who want to voice their political agenda. In the 1970s, actress, Vanessa Redgrave accepted the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role by advocating for the Palestinian Liberation Organization.
