In the early years of the 20th century, Joseph Pilates, created this popular exercise derived from his last name. During this time, Joseph Pilates was a German boxer and performed in a circus.

The idea for Pilates came while he was forced live in an internment camp during World War I. To keep healthy, he created floor exercises for himself and the people that were living in the camp with him.

After World War I was over, Joseph Pilates returned to Germany and worked with the Hamburg Military Police. He ended up moving again to the United States. Upon his return he fell in love and got married. He still had the exercise plan on the back burner. This helps your body to have strength, endurance and flexibility. In addition to that, Joseph Pilates introduced the concept of how to breathe correctly using Contrology. This helped to provide strength and stamina for the inner part of your body.

Nowadays, Contrology is referred to as Pilates. It was named after the person who created this exercise. Pilates has since spread like wildfire across the United States and other places such as Europe and Asia.
Chapter 2 - The Six Principles of Pilates

Pilates stands on a foundation that is guided by six principles. These principles help to maintain movement of your body and control of your mind. Let’s take a look at them:

Breathing – One important factor of Pilates is breathing. Joseph Pilates showed his students how to utilize deep breathing while exercising to help the lungs and chest muscles get stronger. Another reason breathing is an important part of Pilates is because every movement is guided and protected. When you inhale and exhale, the air you breathe in and out correlates with every move you make.

As you concentrate, you will be able to have the utmost upper hand of Pilates without having to move a lot. Joseph Pilates considered concentration to be an important part of Pilates in order to zoom in on the exercise. This helped to get the results you were looking for.

Control – For this purpose, in Pilates, this is referring to control of your muscles. With Pilates, it is important to control the muscles, even if it’s a slight movement. When the muscles are controlled, they get strengthened and endure resistance as you continue exercising.

Flow – When flow is involved, this is how the exercises are executed. Joseph Pilates was interested in using less movement. In addition to that, he wanted to create more efficiency and body effects. So, he decided more flowing movements and shunned the exercises that took most if not all of your strength.

Precision – When you’re doing Pilates, you have to pay attention to what you’re doing. With this, it’s important to have correct placement and alignment of one part of your body to another as you go through each movement.
