Nearly 65% of children say they participate in sports to be with their friends (Statistic Brain). Sports were created so that the individual could get exercise but also to compete against an enemy. In addition to the individual sport, team sports quickly became popular. The idea of a team sport is that every single person on the field or court must work together to have the best opportunity to win. With the increasing popularity of sports, the average child’s age when they join sports is becoming less and less. Just in my short lifetime of eighteen years, the age that a child joins a basketball team has gone from fourth grade to first grade or even kindergarten. One key focus of a team sport in today’s society is to learn life lessons while having fun. Sports help the child succeed by creating a strong work ethic through the implementation of life lessons along with conditioning. Coach Miller, my head football coach at Central DeWitt High School in Iowa, taught me many life lessons throughout the course of the football season. Whether it was joining the nursery home in a game of bingo, or helping the school complete a landscaping project, Miller knew how to incorporate community service into the lives of many on the football team. The team may have had a 0.125 win percentage but winning was not the lesson Miller wanted to teach. Team sports create a strong background of responsibility, work ethics, and communication. Throughout high school, a child may try many different sports. As a byproduct of sports, children develop work ethics from conditioning with the intention of improving their bodies overall fitness. Little do they know, they are actually building their physical and mental health from running. Children develop responsibility throughout sports because they must be held accountable by the team and themselves in order to play the whole season. In high school, students must maintain a D or higher letter grade in class otherwise they will have to serve a thirty-day penalty. During this penalty the child must attend practice but cannot participate in games. Students also learn the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently through sports. Every single team sport requires all the players on the field to be vocal to each other in order to win. The most successful teams are the ones that work hard, hold each other responsible, and communicate. Being able to depend so much on other people often creates the best
