We have all heard the news and watched the movies about the dangers of football because of the frequent cases of players that sustain concussions. Yet, it is still a very popular sport and a source of entrainment for individuals in the United States. With all the attention to the professionals, the spotlight is shined away from young adults and children who are also at risk while playing this sport. My research is ongoing and is about how high school football should be banned. This also includes Pop Warner leagues and tackle football under the age of fourteen. I have used Mesa Community College in-person library and their online database to assemble my list of resources. I have approximately twenty-four sources that are peer-view journals, …show more content…
My data will consist of how the population actually might agree on one particular side to the issue and get a more in depth view of the effects of contact on a young body. The results will either strength or defend my perspective and side to the issue of why high schools should ban the assembly of a tackle football team on their campus. There are two sides of this issue and my defense includes the ban of the assembly of a young football team. The other side could be that football helps keeps children in shape and active. The whole reason why I believe football should be banned in high schools is because of the dangers of head hits. There are trials and lawsuits where professional football players are suing NFL because of the consequence/side-effect of multiple hits to the head. Young football players are unaware …show more content…
However, playing football does help kids to stay active and is very entertaining. Mrs. Torpey is an author for The Gale Encyclopedia of Nursing and Allied Health and discussed how “studies have shown that, in general, childhood activity is on the decline and childhood obesity is on the rise. Requirements for physical education in schools have become less stringent. One survey sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control reports that 50% of high school students are not enrolled in physical education (2547).” Obesity can occur with or without tackle football because of the amount of other physical activities that are available for kids. A growing body of scientific evidence indicates that the declining levels of physical activity and fitness in children and youth are associated with adverse impacts on their health, including rising levels of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome and increased risk of sports injury. Both high body mass index and physical activity level have been associated with an increased risk of sports injuries. BMI is a measure of body fat that is the ratio of the weight of the body in kilograms to the square of its height in meters. I will rebuttal this issue with one of my articles that is written by a group of authors. The Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports wrote that “there were no differences in sustaining
Are young children putting their health and even their lives at risk if they partake in the sport of football? Some claim that the American sport is far too dangerous and the risk of concussions and injuries far outway the pros of the physical sport, while others insist that technological improvements and new regulations have made the sport safer. Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor of history and education at New York University, argues in his paper, “We Must Stop Risking the Health of Young Football Players,” that football is a sport that is too dangerous for the youth. He states his belief that technological improvements in helmets and changes in the rules of the sport have had little effect on reducing injuries and that nothing has worked.
In Daniel Flynn’s essay “Football Does a Body Good,” he states his point of view on football and the way people should see it. Football is a dangerous sport that has caused many types of head injuries concussions and other health problems throughout the years. This popular sport has caused many players to develop diseases later on in life, such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, also known as CTE, Alzheimer 's, and Dementia. One of the NFL’s most pressing issues is concussions, which can have life-changing health effects on the football players.
Football is an extremely violent game not only in the physical part but also in the mental part of the game. Players are coach to be vicious on the field. they are taught to get mad and take their aggression out on the other player. Which can be dangerous when two or more players are trying to hurt(intentionally or not) the other player by hitting them hard. High school sports are dangerous because rese...
Since football’s inception, it has been considered a manly sport. Young boys have been encouraged by their parents to participate in the game. For many boys, it is considered a rite of passage. However, football is a dangerous sport. A study conducted by the Center for Injury Research and Policy found, “an estimated 5.25 million football-related injuries among children and adolescents between 6 and 17 years of age were treated in U.S. emergency departments between 1990 and 2007. The annual number of football-related injuries increased 27 percent during the 18-year study period, jumping from 274,094 in 1990 to 346,772 in 2007” (Nation 201). These reported injuries include sprains and strains, broken bones, cracked ribs, torn ligaments, and concussions. A concussion usually happens when a player takes a hard hit to the head or is knocked unconscious on the playing field, and if not diagnosed and treated quickly, a concussion can result in death.
Football is possibly too dangerous of a game for young boys and girls to be playing. I am not talking about all forms of football, but more specifically tackle football. Yes, football may possibly be one of America’s loved sport because of the brutality that it consists of; although I believe that there should be an age where kids should start playing such a horrific game. At the age of ten young boys, and girls, should be worrying about who they are going to be playing with outside at recess. Kids should not have to be worried about their friends having to miss school because of a concussion, or worse him or herself.
In the article “Should Kids Play Football” from the Scholastic Scope on February 2015, writer Jennifer Shotz discusses both issues of the benefits and dangers of playing American football. For example, Jennifer Shots mentioned that tens of thousands of young football players get concussions every year. She states that most players return to the game after they are healed but some never return because their concussion was too severe to their health. On the other hand, the writer also discusses how football isn't the only sport that encounters concussions. The rules of football are always changing and each new rule provides a safer way to play the game. For example, the writer notes that Pop Warner has reduced the amount of practice time dedicated
As can be seen by the preceding information, high school athletics can have a positive impact on a student’s life. In contrast to the positives, high school athletics can be seen in a negative light. “Concussions [from athletics] cause structural brain damage” (Solotaroff 7). Even though nobody is said to get a concussion in Friday Night Lights, they are very frequent in football and in other sports today. They occur all the time in football.
For example, “The N.F.L., which long denied that there was any link between the game and brain damage, has in recent years been promoting what it considers safer tackling techniques aimed at reducing head-to-head collisions” (Larned, CNN). This is important because it helps you understand the action being taken to reduce head to head contact in effort to reduce concussions in football at all ages. This shows that the more we study tackles and new techniques, the more we are able to take concussions out of football. In addition, Victoria Larned wrote, “It suggests that participants weigh potential health risks against the recreation benefits of proper tackling.” This shows that, in fact, many people are aware of the benefits gained by proper tackling technique. If kids are introduced to proper tackling techniques, the game of football becomes safer for both the tackler and the ball carrier. Teaching kids proper tackling will help reduce the amount of head and neck injuries in
Are you a fan of hard hitting and instant impact? Do you get excited when you see grown men and boys colliding with each other? Football is the most popular sport in America, it is like by me and a lot of other fans that watch the liveliness of the sport. While it is the most popular sport in America it also has the worst repercussions for the athletes that play the sport. Football has a direct correlation between the sport and concussions. The NFL should take more action to prevent high impact head collisions which can lead to concussions. Potential long term effects from physicality of the football. A question always asked is if football ever going be safe? More and more concussions multiple lawsuits against the NFL and the ratings for league
Every sport has its tricks and ways of doing things the right way. You can assure anyone that the sport their child is playing is safe, because there is always a stronger, bigger, faster player than them. Personally, I believe football is a demanding sport that requires a lot of strength, and stamina. If you read the article “Hard Knocks” by Alan Schwarz, it gives a brief story about a young football player. “The autopsy showed that his brain was in the early stage of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, more commonly known as C.T.E.” Many football players die from this condition.
One of the biggest controversial topics going on today is should children still be aloud to play football, knowing what we know about serious injuries? The article that I chose ( “Don’t Let Kids play football”) is about the consequences that could occur playing such a contact sport. The debate is that some people believe that football teaches important life lessons and others believe that it can cause serious life changing injuries.
From long practice hours, hot summer workouts, and many Friday nights, my personal observation of this dangerous sport is exceptionally prevalent. My initial experience of the damage that football brings came my eighth grade year when I witnessed a senior football player on my team try and eat a phone on the ride home after receiving a concussion in the third quarter of the game. Which is a prime example to defend the fact that football related injuries to the head result in people not “being all there.” Not only have I seen someone try and eat a phone, but I have also witnessed head injuries resulting in my own friend randomly yelling at me after a game for no reason, and also a friend trying to jump down a full flight of stairs thinking he was starring in a movie. The fast paced, high intensity contact that comes with playing football is nothing to think flippantly of when it plays a role on brain trauma, and the results of brain trauma.
In stadiums, parks and fields all across America, many youth participate in a journey through defeat, heartbreak, hard work, and success. Practicing for hours, rain or shine, to be able to snag that game winning touchdown in the back of the endzone. Although football comes with many risks and dangers, I strongly believe that kids and teens should be allowed to play football because it promotes leadership, teamwork, and requires significant amounts of exercise and cardiovascular activity, and other contact sports are just as dangerous.
To summarize, football is a dangerous sport that can cause multiple serious injuries like brain damage, concussions, fractures and or death. The majority of people still think football is a menace, especially for teens that are still growing and developing. Equally important, there are analysis and programs indicate a number of injuries between high school exposures and collegiate football exposures and trying to find safer ways to play. Then again, there are doctors, trainers, and N.F.L players that are recommending new ideas to create a safer game for everyone to play without risking injuries as
Football, one of the most popular sports in the U.S., is also the most dangerous; it holds an astounding half a million injuries nationally due to the sheer violence and brute strength used against another player in the sport, and, although it is believed that these injuries can be prevented, there is nothing stopping another player from recklessly hurting another except their will-power, this is why football should be banned from high schools.
