The purpose of this paper is to examine the Heritage Valley Medical Center case study. The paper will start off with a brief background of Heritage Valley, along with a summary of the major problems and issues faced there. Next, the author will explain the role that was chosen while addressing the challenges of Heritage Valley and their reasoning in doing so. The author will then identify the strengths and weaknesses of Heritage Valley and offer to select the best alternative and recommended solutions, which will be followed by a brief description of the evaluation plan that could be used to measure the effectiveness of the recommended solution. When the managers and staff were questioned during the meeting, there seemed to have been a lot of negative views towards minorities. Whether or not the staff has their own personal views, they need to remember that quality of care and patient satisfaction are their goals. A secondary issue that comes into play is the lack of diversity within management. According to the text, it says that 85% of management consists of Caucasians, while there are only 2 African American managers and only 1 Hispanic manager and 1 female manager (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2011). This could lead to a major problem because they will not be able to connect with the amount of diverse patients that are coming in since they do not provide multilingual services. The role that was chosen in this situation would be the Vice President of Community Relation and the reason it was chosen is because of the desire to try and correct the situation. My job would be to address the situation with the medical centers executive team and try to explain the attitudes of the hospital staff while also trying to come up with a solution (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2011). One advantage to this role is bring an understanding of why the need for a more diverse population within the medical center is actually the best thing that can happen to the hospital.
