As time progresses, women earn the same rights as men through hard work and determination and the help of the feminist movement. Despite the struggles that women have endured, there is a common theme of women tearing other women down. Whether it is in the work place, in school, or on social media, women heavily criticize other women and make it harder for other women to move up in the world. Men do not go out of their way to make life harder for another man because he is a man, but some women do this to other women as they believe they must challenge them in order to make them stronger. In Heathers, the main character, Veronica gains access to the popular clique in school and joins their ranks. The group decides to pick on a fat girl in their class named Martha for their own amusement and to Martha feel worse about herself. Veronica, disgusted by the behavior of the group, confronts the prettiest and most popular girl in the school. This popularity ‘queen’, Heather Chandler, threatens to ruin Veronica’s life if she tries to get in the way of her fun. After attempting to apologize, Veronica ‘accidently’ gives Heather Chandler drain cleaner to drink and kills her. Although taken to an extreme, Heathers once again shows how the girls with more social power look down upon and criticize others to feel better about themselves. In this genre that focuses on the socially powerful, the ending is similar to Bernice Bob’s Her Hair as the antagonist receives their comeuppance. It was not uncommon to hear of female bosses that would make the lives of their female employees difficult in order to make them ‘stronger’ because the world is a hard place. This behavior creates more stress in the workplace and makes it more difficult for women to be promoted than their male counter parts. Online, women are more critical of other women and leave hate comments in order to bring down those they view as superior (). The toxic behavior that follows jealousy makes many women feel better about themselves. Women are so critical and jealous of each other that they try to tear down the success of other women.
