STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, which are needed in our daily lives. Science is used from elementary to college and other places around the world. Technology has continuous advantages that happen 24/ 7. Engineering is the foundation of bridges, buildings, and roadways. Then mathematics is necessary in various careers but also in everyday live. STEM careers the break the traditional gender roles that allows women to have more opportunities. As a result there are numerous women that created impacts which changed the world for the better. One woman in STEM that mainly impacted and inspired me was Hattie Scott Peterson.
Hattie Scott Peterson was born in Norfolk, Vigrinia on October 11, 1913 to Hattie and Uzeil Scott. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Howard University in 1946. Soon afterward, she started her career as a survey and cartographic engineer for the U.S. Geological Survey in Sacramento California. Plus, she was advocate for women to go into engineering careers and break the stereotypes of it only being a male profession. Peterson has faced various hardships throughout her career; however through it all she displayed class and professionalism that led her to greater opportunities. Not to mention, she advocated women to be in more engineering careers so they can gain more opportunities that just working at a simple desk job. Plus, she gained many awards, which shows me I can get great opportunities from majoring in Civil Engineering. My decision was to major in Civil Engineering and Applied Mathematics at Claflin and Clemson. If I receive this scholarship, I would feel so grateful knowing that someone is willing to aid me in expanding my college education, securing myself closer to my career and give back to the
