What It Takes to Live Happily Ever After Today, when many marriages end in divorce rather than death, a long and happy marriage is no easy feat. This is because nothing worth having is easy. Spouses must stay true to one another in good times and in bad. They must care for one another in sickness and in health. They must love each other for better and for worse. So, how do spouses persevere through the trials of marriage and live happily ever after? Spouses’ love for one another must be fostered with mutual respect for one another, similar shared values, and a genuine care for each other in order to maintain a successful and happy marriage. Lifting one another up means making each other happy and making each other feel good about his or herself. Lifting each other up is important in a marriage because in order to experience happiness, one needs to first be happy with his or herself. There are many ways couples must do this. The first way couples need to lift each other up is by showing appreciation for the other. Everyone needs to feel appreciated. People’s self-worth is tied to the praises of others. For example, when a wife thanks her husband for the dinner he cooked, the husband feels appreciated. However, if he frequently makes dinner but never receives acknowledgement or appreciation from his wife, he feels his efforts are unnoticed and are being taken for granted. No spouse should ever feel this way. Another way couples can lift each other up is by building one another’s self-confidence. People need to feel good about themselves, be confident in who they are, and have assurance in their abilities. These needs must be met with help from the spouse.
