They celebrate the victory of the Maccabees that beat armies in Syria. They also celebrate the liberation of the Temple of Jerusalem. They celebrate by praying and lighting candles or a hanukkiyah. Hanukkah is different for every year, this year it is December 24 - January 1. Next year it is on December 12 - 20. No matter when Hanukkah is on any year it will always be eight days. There are many customs on Hanukkah like they listen to Hanukkah songs and they light a Menorah or a nine branched candle. They also play with a toy dreidel or a spinning top and this is used in a Hanukkah game. This spinning top has four words on it, nun or take nothing, gimmel or take everything, hey or take half and shin or put in one. They play Song about Hanukkah, just like Christmas but Hanukkah sings about the traditions. “(“Rock of Ages”), a Hanukkah song, traditionally is sung after the lighting of the candles each night, and at other times throughout the holiday.” There are many other songs that are sung during the whole holiday that can also be sung. With the candles they light one every day, over time they candles have been substituted for oil. Hanukkah originally started when Syrian armies attacked and the Jerusalem's fought back and won. In 168 B. C. E. they had a celebration and to this day it has been Hanukkah. Hanukkah can also be called Chanukah or it can also be called Festival of Lights. During Hanukkah they exchange gifts and it is looked down upon because it is looked at like a rip off of Christmas. During Hanukkah there are seven days of just feasting, prayer and festivities.
