The show unravels as Will forces himself to step into the killer’s shoes and as his mind drifts into the void, we see it gradually taking a toll on his psyche. He begins to lose touch with reality, as when a monstrous elk which haunts his dreams, begins to appear in reality through his hallucinations. He is supported by Caroline Dhavernas as Alona Bloom, a psychiatric consultant who is his friend and mental protector. Laurence Fishburne appears as Jack Crawford, who only seems like a hurricane pushing Will further from himself, gradually revealing himself to be tortured soul struggling with problems and imperfections, and has some of the most emotional material throughout series. The title character and antagonist, the intelligent psychopath, Dr. Hannibal Lecter is played by Mads Mikkelsen. Hannibal Lecter is unique in his insanity. He’s not a psychopath, because he can experience regret, and he not a sociopath, because he experiences empathy, so his unique mental state gives him this higher sensibility than just a mortal man. Mikkelsen’s chilling depiction of Dr. Lecter, less like the classic cannibal psychiatrist previously played by Anthony Hopkins and Brian Cox, is more like Lucifer, who was a dark angel with this affinity for mankind and a fascination with the human condition. One of the most visually aesthetic scenes is in Hannibal Lecter’s dining room. The deep royal blue leaves an erie tone, but the food looking absolutely delicious, distracts the viewer with sophistication and class, only to remind us that there are human body parts hidden in the dishes. Cannibals think the only way to possess someone, to truly love someone, is to consume them. As we watch the characters eat these meals, we can understand the feeling of wanting to consume something impressive and delectable, but can see the darkness in their methods. The show tries to make you feel the emotions of the psychopaths through these symbols. Will feels the emotions of these killers as he mentally connects with their total consciousness using a self hypnosis technique. It’s this kind of method of self-hypnosis, so he can get himself in the mindset of these horrible human beings. The show gives us a look into his mindset with his eyes closing, and a pendulum like orange beam of light swings across the screen, back and forth, as he reverses time at the crime scene to see it in real time from the killer’s perspective. From this perspective, we really understand how traumatizing it is for him to do what he does. We often see the use of red in this series, like Hannibal’s office and drapes, the walls of the bathroom, and in certain costume pieces likely suggesting the blood that pools inside all of us.
