In a press conference on Tuesday, President Obama announced that a series of policies will be put into place in order to make the requirements for the purchase of firearms more rigorous. This measure will make the requirements for a vendor to sell a gun more strict and the background check process for a potential gun owner to be more stringent. The new policy will be put into place without congressional consent. In his speech, Obama noted that the United States is not the only country that is home to violent and dangerous people. He said that, although our country may not be prone to violence any more than the rest of the world, it is the only advanced country on earth that frequently experiences episodes of mass violence. The president, …show more content…
One important part of the policy is the attempt to close a hole in the law that gives people the option to purchase guns from private vendors and avoid the background check process. A statement from the White House provided more information on this policy, stating that, no matter where guns are sold, all vendors who sell firearms or intent to sell them must obtain a license and agree to perform background checks on each potential buyer. The new policy also states that $500 million will be invested in improving access to mental health services. This money will also go towards eliminating rules that prevent current background checking systems from collecting data about people who are banned from purchasing guns due to mental health issues. Additionally, White House officials stated that more funding will be given to the Bureaus of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in order to enforce these new laws. To make background checks more efficient, the FBI will be revamping their background check system and hiring additional examiners to speed up the …show more content…
The new policy was enacted after the Obama administration began developing a case regarding the actions that could be taken against gun violence without having to implement legislation that would be sent for approval to Congress, who has previously been extremely resistant to small gun control measures. Obama also stated in his press conference that Americans are in consensus about what needs to be done in this situation. Although it is true that more extensive background checks are favorable to most Americans, a ban on assault weapons all together is not as favorable. In fact, according to recent polls, the support for a ban on assault weapons is lower than 50
Right now, the U.S. has a National Instant Background Check System; however, it contains many flaws. This system is meant to act as a filter to stop the wrong people from having guns. In 2007, the Bipartisan legislation was passed to strengthen this system. It relies on data supplied by the states, but the data is often incomplete and inadequate (Merino 104). Unlicensed gun sellers have also created a dangerous loophole. The law makes an exception for gun sellers who aren’t federally licensed gun dealers. These sellers sell guns informally through venues such as gun shows, and are not required to run background checks. This is a dangerous loophole where people who should not have guns can get them (“Gun”). Senator Frank R. Lautenberg once stated, commenting on the gun sh...
Public policies are developed in response to the existence of a perceived problem or an opportunity. The analysis delves into a public issue or problem and assesses a set of proposed government action for addressing the issue. The job of the analyst is to describe the background and status of an issue and then, using research and analysis, determine a proper government action to resolve the issue. By comparing options and weighing their expected benefits, the analyst should conclude with a recommended course of action or inaction to addressing the issue.
The final version of the Brady Act requires mandatory background checks on individuals before a firearm purchase can be made from a federally licensed dealer, manufacturer, or importer, unless there is an exception. Section 992 (g) of the Brady Bill prohibits certain persons from shipping or transporting any firearm in interstate or foreign commerce, or receiving any firearm which has been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce, or possessing any firearm in or affecting commerce. These prohibitions apply to any person who:
Assault weapon control is becoming an unavoidable topic in the United States. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation more than nine hundred people have died from mass shootings in the past seven years and an assault rifle was used in twelve of the forty-three mass shootings in the past four years. The U.S. Department of Defense has long defined assault rifles as fully automatic rifles used for military purposes. The National Firearm Act of 1934 prohibited fully automatic weapons in the United States. The 1994 Assault Weapon Ban prohibited semi and fully automatic weapons and any weapon with military style characteristics. California Senator, Dianne Feinstein, is leading the charge in the American government to pass a bill that will limit the capacity of ammunition in a magazine and ban assault weapons that are too dangerous for public use. It is time for the American government to act swiftly and acknowledge the dangers assault rifles pose.
The Obama administration is making valiant efforts to reduce gun violence in our country, and protect American citizens, but they need to re-evaluate some of their efforts. Both advocates of gun control and groups that oppose gun control were stricken with heartbreak over the massive shootings. Both parties want to help reduce gun violence, but is the Obama administration taking the right steps? Even though Obama and his administration have good intentions, they do not have the most efficient approach to reduction of gun violence. They are so worried about the safety of our people, that they are creating laws from a knee jerk reaction. As a country, we need to realize that these laws are the starting points of losing our 2nd amendment freedoms, and we to acknowledge that these restrictions are not the best way to prevent further violence in the future.
...form of mass shooting has occurred. At one point, guns were used as a means of protection, but as time went on, they fell into the hands of the wrong people who have used them for mob violence as well as plain random acts of violence against innocent people. For that, the Presidents have felt that we should all be placed on stricter gun laws.
Obama said several things in his speech that were inaccurate while completely missing the mark on "Gun Show Loopholes". However, he does kind of have the right idea. There is not a gun show in the country that doesn't do background checks for all "dealer sales". If a gun is part of a store or dealers stock inventory, then a background check is already done. The problem that was missed is that, for some reason, it is legal for a dealer to sell an apparently unlimited number of guns to himself, making him their legal owner, and then selling them to whomever he
In 1982, a survey of male inmates from eleven different penitentiaries, stated that sixty-nine percent of the prisoners knew another criminal that had been scared off, wounded, or decided not to commit a crime because they thought the victim had a gun (Agresti and Smith). As The United States heads to the end of 2013, current gun control debates are striking the nation, leaving everyone to develop their own positions on which side of the debate they want to be on. Gun control is defined as efforts to regulate or control sales of guns; however, most of what we hear from other people is that Obama wants to take away every gun in the nation. That’s not entirely true. Obama’s proposal to Congress is a law that would increase background check protocols, ban assault weapons, high-capacity ammunition, and armor-piercing bullets. The proposal also provides more funding for additional police officers on the streets, first response training, mental health programs, and school emergency plans.
Although the Second Amendment prevents the federal government from completely banning guns in America, limited restrictions are allowed on the distribution and possession of firearms. Certain groups of people such as criminals, the mentally unstable, and soldiers dishonorably discharged from the military are prohibited from possessing or interacting with firearms (Flynn). These restrictions are enforced by background checks in some states on both a state and federal level. However, gun laws vary from state to state and are often not thorough enough; the background checks are flawed due to lack of information and misinformation, and guns can easily end up in the hands of criminals and malevolent individuals. The ease of obtaining a firearm in America fosters crime and a dangerous environment. Hence, the Second Amendment should be reinterpreted so that stricter gun laws can be implemented because modern citizens do not require guns, current background checks are flawed, gun...
There are gun control laws to try and reduce the number of violent shootings that occur. They are trying to put limits on weapons that Americans can own. The government is trying to take our guns away mainly because of people that are criminally insane. Most of the people who commit crimes don’t even have the weapons legally. If the government takes away the rights of people who are allowed to have firearms in their possession, it will most definitely cause an outrage. Most people believe that the people should be more capable of maintain proper use of the firearms instead of having them all taken away. Taking the firearms from Americans away would cause a lot more problems than there actually are. The people will be upset with the government taking firearms away because of the horrible people who harm innocent people using them. So they will do anything to their capabilities to keep them.
... stricter gun control, the states are moving in a different direction. The reason behind this action is that the constitutionality of tighter gun control laws is becoming a question. Once the Supreme Court of the United States answers this question on the legality of infringing on the right to bear arms we will know what our exact right is.
Many Americans are now applying for a license to carry licensed concealed arms with them. The rate at which licenses are being approved is worrying. This development is concerning law enforcement authorities. Putting so many firearms at the disposal of the public is counterproductive to the gains that are being made on improving security and especially in the cities where incidences of gun crime and violence are on the rise.
Frates, Chris. “The Gun Debate Isn’t Over Yet.” National Journal (2013): Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. Web. 31 Oct. 2013.
Is the right to bare arms worth the amount of deaths and injuries in the United States? Gun Control has been a heavily debated and controversial topic throughout the United States. In 2013, 30,000 people died of gunshot wounds in America. After the prohibition of the “Gun Control Act of 1968,” there was a massive increase in homicide and suicide. Because there are so many shootings and unnecessary death today everywhere in the United States because of guns, the nation should adopt a universal gun control system enforcing stricter gun control laws, including background checks and permits.
Over the past year, the United States has been plagued with controversy in regards to gun control legislation. On January 24, 2013, Senator Feinstein introduced the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013. The Assault Weapons Ban was a bill written to stop the acts of sale, transfer, importation, and manufacturing of military styled weapons. The NRA-ILA website quotes an excerpt of Feinstein’s bill, which states, “Feinstein’s new bill are as follows: Reduces, from two to one, the number of permitted external features on various firearms. The 1994 ban permitted various firearms to be manufactured only if they were assembled with no more than one feature listed in the law. Feinstein’s new bill would prohibit the manufacture of the same firearms with even one of the features.” (NRA-ILA) Wayne Lapierre, Executive Vice President of the NRA, said in 2009, “There’s not a dime’s worth of difference between the guns you want to ban and you don’t want to ban. You’re going to ban these semi-autos, and then it’s going to be handguns, and then it’s going to be pump shotguns.” Lapierre’s statement supports the fact that the recent gun ban legislation across the United States will not solve the problem of increased violence.
