Settings in “Great Expectations” have an important relation with the story. Authors usually use settings to set forth the tone and mood of the story. The novel is based around Pip, an orphan who has been raised by his elder sister Mrs. Joe. Pip narrates the book “Great Expectations” as he grows up and goes through many obstacles. Important characters that have been mentioned are Pip, Miss Havisham, Estella, Mrs. and Mr. Joe. Charles Dickens includes three different settings that show the mood, atmosphere, and echo the characters in the story. The three different settings Dickens uses in “Great Expectations” are the graveyard, Mrs. Joe’s house, and Miss Havisham’s house to set forth the tone and mood which will reflect the plot of the story. …show more content…

For the setting of Mrs. Joe's house, Dickens uses' mood and atmosphere. “I clutched the leg of the table again immediately, and pressed it to my boom as if it had been the companion of my youth and friend of my soul.” This quote shows tension. Pip is scared and in tension because he knows what is going to happen when Mrs. Joe goes to get the pie, that is why he is clutching the table leg. Tension is also created when the soldiers come to Mrs. Joe’s house because Pip thinks that they are here for him when really they came for Mr. Joe. The soldiers, Mr. Joe, and Pip go to the marshes to capture the convicts. At this point, Pip has more tension on his shoulders because he knows that if his convict is captured, he will spill the truth. Havisham’s house. The mood and atmosphere at Mrs. Havisham's house is gloomy. “ Some of the windows had been walled up, of those that remained, all the lower were rustily barred.” This quote shows an atmosphere and the mood of gloominess because the house is decaying. There's a cake on the table that has been rotted and there's also a wedding dress which has turned yellow because it's been out for such a long period. This shows the mood of gloominess because this setting shows the readers that these items have been out for a long period, and how Miss Havisham is left in the past. This setting also echos Mrs. Havisham. The frozen watch shows her failure to move beyond her painful past. The condition of her house reflects Mrs. Havisham as isolating herself.
