Graves disease is an autoimmune disease that is characterized by an overactive thyroid gland. In Graves disease the bodies immune system doesn't protect the body, but instead use antibodies, thyrotropin receptor antibodies and thyroid stimulating immunoglobulins, to bind to receptors on the surface of thyroid cells and stimulate those cells to overproduce and release thyroid hormones, this results in hyperthyroidism. In the United States, Graves disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism.
