Hello, I am Anel Bektas, we may already know each other really well, but here we go. To begin, my parents are Bosnian immigrants who came to the United States after the war in Bosnia in the year 1993. My parents names are Mirsad and Almedina Bektas. Four years later, they had my older brother Amer, who to this day is nineteen. Another four years had passed and they had the best child of all, which is definitely me. Then another four years later they had my little brother Armin, who to this day is ten. As you can see my parents liked having kids every four years. Living in between cultures is something that I have had to struggle with, for much of my life. As a second generation immigrant, I have found myself negotiating between two cultural identities. On one end I identify as an American, and on the other as a Latina who is Nicaraguan and Dominican. Throughout my life my identity has come under attack from both sides. I have been called too American by my immigrant family while also being called too Latina by peers and academia. As a first generation college student and second generation immigrant, I have faced the stressors of living in between cultures. I have received both acceptance and rejection, as well as experienced stress relating to my mother’s status in this country and my responsibility to help her navigate daily activities.
My nephew is trying to get back to Tennessee and I have attached his resume. He is currently a Secret Service Agent and does their electronic crimes investigations when he is not on the road. I cannot speak of his work since I have not been around him in that capacity, but he is a man of great integrity. I spent a lot of time with him when he while he was growing up, and I have never even heard him say a curse word and he has heard me say many. If you have any openings or know of anyone in Nashville area that might be able to use him, please let me know. He would like to stay federal, but he would go private sector to get back to TN.

Starting my freshman year at County High School, I played basketball and loved every minute of it. I wouldn’t be conceited enough to say I was good, but God did bless me with the talent to play. My life revolved around the sport of basketball; some would say I slept, ate, and breathed every part of it. I spent all my time training and practicing to make myself a more dedicated athlete. This dedication not only helped me as a player, but also molded me into the person I am today. It somehow helped to prepare me for what defeat I would face with back surgery in the future.
As a Latina growing up in New York City with parents from the Dominican Republic, I knew the difficulties of living in poverty. As a child, financial arguments were a common thing, budgets were strict and extra funds were low. However, when it came to education money was not a factor. Education was the solution to poverty, with a good education you’ll succeed and obtain a great job. I kept this mentality with me throughout my academic career. I completed my undergraduate studies in Rhetoric and Communications in hopes of starting a marketing career. That quickly changed when I started my first post-undergraduate job.
At a young age, my teachers and parents taught me to believe that I could do and accomplish anything that I set my mind to. I grew up thinking that I was unstoppable and that the only limit to my achievements was the sky. However, during my second year in high school, I began to realize that I was not as unstoppable as I had thought. I began to experience the consequences of my parent’s decision of bringing me to the United States illegally. Among those consequences were, not being able to apply for a job, obtain a driver’s license or take advantage of the dual enrollment program at my high school, simply because I did not possess a social security number. I remember thinking that all of my hard work was in vain and that I was not going to
I decided that I wanted to play a sport, I chose volleyball. Most of my friends played the sport so it wasn't hard for me to adjust and make new friends. Becoming a student athlete was a big adjustment for me, I could no longer float through my classes but I need to excel. And that's exactly what I did. For the first time in my high school career I made not only honor roll, but principal’s honor roll. For the first time my mom was proud of my report card, that made me even more proud. From then on I knew I wanted nothing less than what I earned, good grades and a proud family. From my decision to chose to become a student athlete not only make me work harder but, be great at everything I put my mind to. I had motivation to stay successful, to stay eligible. Three years ago if you were to ask me where I thought I would be my senior year, I probably would have told you low level classes barely making it by. Now here I am today excelling in my education preparing to take the next step in my future, college. Even if we don’t understand why we go through them, we have to be willing to let our obstacles become out
Thanks for commenting. I agree with many of you points, however I do not believe that immigrants are taking the jobs of able Americans. Farm work, gardening, and other labor intensive jobs are not be filled by U.S. citizens (possibly having to do with low wages), so why would it be an issue if these immigrants decided to work in these fields? In addition to this, refugees can create their own businesses, so this doesn’t necessarily take jobs away from American workers. Unfortuanely there are many unemployed Americans, however in many cases, it is a matter of multiple applications and having the right skills. If people are not qualified for the job, then obviously it should be given to someone with the proper credentials. If immigrants have these skills then why wouldn’t a company want to hire them, versus someone who is lacking the specific background and or education?
I don’t sing, I can’t draw, and I definitely do not dance. Other than the ability to memorize useless things, I was blessed with the ability to play sports. Since I was six my life has revolved around sports. Throughout these eleven years of continuous ball, I have developed a highly competitive attitude, learned how to be a leader, and learned how to deal with adversity.
Throughout our life we encounter many significant moments, but our families look out for the most important moment of all, our high school graduation. Graduation for immigrant families is something that not many have achieved. Thus Latin families worry and wait the most for their kids to graduate. Although not many get to live that dream of seeing their kids graduating, some families do and that moment becomes very special to them.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has been called the most complicated country in the world and rightfully so. Over the years, it has been the center of conflict for many different wars of several different nations, which have left the country scarred and bitter. To understand the complex country of Bosnia fully, one must study its basic history, culture, and government.
It is probably a mistake that I am standing here giving a speech for graduation. In fact it is probably a mistake that I am even graduating from this school at all -- believe me, just as most people in this class I have tested the limits of attendance, of sleeplessness, and of procrastination. At the beginning of my high schooling, I was even testing dropping out ... and if that wasn't a mistake, I don't know what was. After four years of Starr altering our minds, it seemed most fitting for me to spend my four minutes talking about mistakes. Thank goodness for them, by the way -- it is only when we truly screw up big time that we are ever stopped in our tracks -- stopped, briefly, to learn lessons of worth.
Not a day goes by without extensive coverage of the EU refugee crisis in the media. Everybody should know by now. That there are thousands people leaving their home, their live, they leave everything behind to leave the country. Trek cross half of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, pay a lot of money, get abused by smugglers, and then risk their lives on unseaworthy boats? Why would they do that? Nobody cares. Until everybody was on social media and saw a shocking picture of a 3-year-old Alan Kurdi, dead on a beach in Turkey after a boat taking his family to Greece capsized. Then everybody began to pay attention to the Refugee Crisis. Should the European Union open its borders or not?
When I was four, I received my first Fisher Price basketball court. The court was in my house and the basket was only five feet tall. My parents placed it in the living room since it was the only room in the house without carpet. I practiced shooting every day. I would wear my father’s sneakers and imitate basketball moves that I had seen on T.V. At that age, I did not yet have any self-awareness about my potential for the sport, but my father knew it was very likely to become a passion. By the age of five, my father was taking me out to the park with a basketball and I can actually remember the day I made my first basket. After that, I went on to play in basketball leagues, as well as work out with my father in gyms every night. Those were the best of times.
