The overall purpose of the gospel of Luke is “following Jesus, the savior of the world”. The gospel of Luke was written in 80-85 AD to Jews and gentiles, but it was more geared toward the gentiles. A way in which we see that purpose played out throughout the gospel was how Luke portray Jesus having good relationships with the outcasts throughout his gospel. Luke wrote his gospel in a way that will appeal to his audience and convince them through the stories, parables, teachings, and encounters that Jesus is indeed the savior of the world. For this reason, we see Jesus interacting with gentiles, women, the poor, the sick, and the marginalized throughout the gospel of Luke more than any other group. Even on instances where Jesus was interacting with other groups such as the Pharisees, it’s always set up in a way that Jesus is defending the gentiles or arguing with the Pharisees on their hypocrisy. Luke didn’t portray Jesus as disliking the Jews, and only liking the gentiles. He portrays Jesus as the caring God who loves the gentiles as much as he loves the Jews. There are so many similarities between the things that Jesus did in the gospel of Luke and the things that apostle Paul did in the book of acts. For example, both Jesus and Paul went to the Jews at first, but they didn’t receive them (Luke 23: 18, Acts 21:36). So, they went to the gentiles (Luke 10:1-12; Acts 13-1; 19:20).
