The first parable centers on the rich man who does not recognize the existent of the poor man named Lazarus. The rich man “who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.” (Luke16: 19-21) After the rich man lived a very luxuries life he was sent to hell, but the poor man was sent to heaven. The rich man never noticed the poor man or even gave credence to his worldly position. Abraham tells the rich man “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.” The message trying to be pushed is one that follows the Luke gospel that focuses on compassion for outcast and as well social justice. …show more content…

The name Lazarus carries weight as well “Lazarus is the only character in any of the parables who is given a name. The name is the Latinized form of Eleazar and means God is my help.” (Barclay 253) Luke gives Lazarus this name to help push the narrative that God is his savior and that though he was poor he will be in Gods
