The first parable centers on the rich man who does not recognize the existent of the poor man named Lazarus. The rich man “who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.” (Luke16: 19-21) After the rich man lived a very luxuries life he was sent to hell, but the poor man was sent to heaven. The rich man never noticed the poor man or even gave credence to his worldly position. Abraham tells the rich man “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.” The message trying to be pushed is one that follows the Luke gospel that focuses on compassion for outcast and as well social justice. …show more content…
The name Lazarus carries weight as well “Lazarus is the only character in any of the parables who is given a name. Howard Thurman in his book, “Jesus and the Disinherited” presented Jesus as a role model for the oppressed on how to find strength, freedom and peace within God and oneself. Thurman shares the story of how Jesus offered an alternative to accepting the Roman rules, like the Sadducees did in hope of being allowed to maintain their Jewish traditions; A solution to remaining silently obedient, like the Pharisees, as hatred and resentment destroyed them from within. The Parable is a story about Rosemary, a young woman who is betrothed to a man named Hernando. Rosemary is supposed to meet Hernando for there up coming wedding but she is faced with a dilemma. In order for her to get to her wedding she has to cross a very deep and wide river that is full of crocodiles. Rosemary is clueless on how she is to get across this river, so she decides to turn to people, she knows, for help. The first person she turns to is Sven for he owns a boat. Sven listens to Rosemary's problem and tells her he will take her across the river if she spends the night with him. Rosemary, surprised and shocked at hearing such an offer, declines and turns to another acquaintance, Lee Pai, for help. Lee Pai tells Rosemary he is sorry but he can't help her. Not knowing what else she can do, Rosemary goes back to Sven for help. She spends the night with him and the next day he takes her across the river. Rosemary and Hernando are then together at last. The Gospel itself was most likely written to a mostly Gentile, urban audience and consistently shows a preferential option for the poor. Readers see numerous instances where the author depicts Jesus as claiming the poor as those who will receive the blessings of Heaven and instructing his followers about the dangers of possessions and wealth. It is obvious that the evangelist was concerned with how his or her local community was responding to the poor and how they were gaining and using their wealth.
In today’s society, Christianity is plagued with many disagreements about how to deal with current issues in society. These problems arise from the fact that Christians have the same fundamental beliefs, but they often disagree on the details. This is the reason why there is a panoply of denominations in the Christian faith. The way that many of the factions in Christianity interpret the word of God can be categorized into different styles of gospel, such as evangelicalism and fundamentalism. One such category that is beginning to gain popularity in today’s society, often taught in megachurches, is Prosperity Gospel. Prosperity Gospel, also called the “Health and Wealth Gospel” by Scot McKnight’s internet article “The Problem for the Prosperity Gospel,” is the belief that if humans adhere to God’s will, then He will in turn bless them with prosperous lives (McKnight). This prosperity often comes in the form of health and wealth according to many megachurches that preach this gospel. In times of economic strife, the prosperity gospel offers comfort in the hopes of having a prosperous future. It is also suspected that Prosperity Gospel has also become an outlet for the people who have a considerable amount of money as a means to justify their wealth. Whatever the reason for believing this gospel, it is important to remember that Prosperity Gospel is just one of the many ways that we can interpret the teachings of the Bible.
Missionaries were a contradiction, one that is not easily sorted. The goals and objectives of the missionary themselves were often purest of heart. Missionaries’ goals were to spread of the gospel, the convert heathens to Christianity and enrich the communities they work in by providing education and medical assistance.
