Goodbye, Mr. Chips There are many assets to a good teacher, and a lot of them are hard to meet. Mr. Chips, however, proves to be one of the best teachers a man could ever know, no matter how much he denies it. Calling himself a mediocre educator, I believe that, against his word, he meets all the requirements, three of his attributes being able to connect with students, open up to them, and work hard for them. His attitude towards his students proves to be one of his greatest perks, from humor to memory. His comedic personality makes him easy to be with and fun to talk to, for many reasons. When he tells a joke about a subject his students were learning about, his students understands the concept of the study. People would always talk about Chips’s latest jokes, helping them not only interact with Mr. Chips but also connect among themselves. This entertaining professor is, from the kindness of his heart, forgiving to the troublemakers in his class. As …show more content…
He could teach a fascinating subject and still have it follow the regulations, being such a good teacher. He once covered a whole war in just a joke, keeping a balance between studying and having fun. As mentioned throughout the story, most of his students became important baronets, proving his methods are as useful as can be. Even the slackers in his class had titles, as well as their parents and grandparents. He teaches relative information and prefers to stick to old words than new changes. Most of the old words were common to society, so he found no reason to change them. Chips proves that hard work pays off, and can spread for many generations. Mr. Chips represents one of the greatest teachers of them all, his attributes enjoyable, his punctuality sharp, and mind keen. From gags to generosity, his characteristics never seem to fail in impressing
Leading up to another arrest after a fight, Will’s brilliance is finally realized when unknowing Professor Lambeau posts what he believes to be a challenging problem to a chalkboard outside of his lecture hall. When Lambeau is made aware of the solved problem the next weekend and addresses his class the following week, no one steps forward to claim their work; Soon after, another problem is posted to help identify the genius and Lambeau catches
His teaching style deviated from verbally sharing the material or writing on the board alone. He resorted to punishments. He created a different culture that the students would have to follow. Through this, he increased class
Character- The main character Charlie is developed in many ways throughout the story. His whole demeanor changed from page one. He actually started smoking in the middle of the book. “When I light it, I didn’t cough. It actually felt soothing. I know that’s bad in a health class kind of way, but it was true.”-pg 102 His personality was different after that. He always tried to be friendly to anyone he met but if you weren’t nice to his friends he didn’t really respect them after that. His dialogue is very similar throughout the whole book. He is very friendly when he talks and tries to be polite. Charlie is trying to make friends and keep them. He succeeds with some coaching from his english teacher who Charlie calls Bill. Bill gave him books to read and graded Charlie’s reports. “He says that I have a great skill at reading and understanding language.”- pg 9-10. A’s showed on Charlie’s report card but Bill gave Charlie different grades. The books Bill gave Charlie changed his mind about a lot of things. Bill developed Charlie through the whole book.
At first, Murray seems like a deep person with interesting quirks (he takes pleasure in sniffing food labels in the supermarket). He’s deeper than the other pop culture professors who read nothing but cereal boxes and have food fights while discussing the culture of public toilets and reminiscing where they were when James Dean died.
“ Patrick says this about Charlie” (during the Homecoming Weekend party), he contrasts the "perks" of being a wallflower with the negative aspects, which are seen when Charlie have difficulty talking to others and observing rather than participating. Patrick agrees Charlie's position in society, the regular Charlie is able to sit back, chill and listen, yet he still understands and is great to his friends. This behavior of charlie is a turning point in the novel. From this point forward, it is easier for Charlie to see and find value in himself. He finds it much easier to participate in the events around him, and he spends less time guessing about what he is about to say or do. He may still struggle but he will get the hang of it, often reverting
Edmundson was considered one of the “interesting” teachers because of the fact he would tell jokes in order to keep the students interested, since it was the one way he figured worked; however, he did not “teach to amuse…or for that matter, to be merely interesting” (Edmundson, Greene-Lidinsky 390). College students get to pick their professors and they have to ability to find out if the professor is to their liking, or else they can just drop the class and/or find a better-suited professor. Edmundson felt as though the student’s “passion seems to be spent,” and that “university culture” is becoming more and more “devoted to consumption and entertainment” (Edmundson, Greene-Lidinsky 391). Furthermore, colleges make it even worse due to the fact that they make the campuses beautiful in order to attract students to apply, so students attend those campuses imagining that the classes will be just as
James Watson, co-discoverer of DNA's double helix structure and Nobel Prize winner donated millions to science, his alma maters, and LI charities. This is a bold man he took the good he did in his life and made it even better by helping another cause. On the other hand a leader is always necessary in a dangerous situation. Where is this better seen than in Lord of the Flies? Since Ralph holds the conch, which symbolizes civil order, respect, and power; he becomes a symbol of boldness, a leader to be
As I read these articles, I agreed with almost everything that was said. The Great Teacher Question: Beyond Competencies, by Edward R. Ducharme begins with a sentence that basically sums up my reason for teaching, “I begin this essay by defining a great teacher as one who influences others in positive ways so that their lives are forever altered” (Ducharme, 1991 p. 2). Over the course of a student’s education they will have many teachers, but there are maybe only one or two who are THE teacher. The teacher who impacts this child’s life in a positive way forever. The rest of the articles follow this same theme, suggesting ways that teachers can become THE teacher. One of the most important qualities I found in these articles (and one I
As the dull scent of chalk dust mixes imperceptably with the drone of the teacher's monotone, I doodle in my tablet to stay awake. I notice vaguely that, despite my best efforts in the shower this morning after practice, I still smell like chlorine. I sigh and wonder why the school's administration requires the students to take a class that, if it were on the Internet, would delight Mirsky (creator of Mirsky's Worst of the Web), as yet another addition to his list of worthless sites. Still, there was hope that I would learn something that would make today's first class more than just forty-five wasted minutes... It wouldn't be the first time I learned something new from the least likely place.
...roughout the session. “Good teachers are not born, nor are they made by tutors. They make themselves. Whats more, anyone can teach well. Research shows that there is no personality type that makes a good teacher. Whether you are a shy introvert or an enthusiastic extrovert, you can teach effectively, but only if you know how to learn from your mistakes and your successes”. (Petty 2009 pg.516 2009)
One of the most popular teachers among high school students, especially teenage girls, is Mr. Dreamy. He clearly just graduated college because he has the face of a young adult and often can be confused for a student. The girls drool over his chiseled jaw line, teeth that shimmer
Each year, as a new group of students enter my classroom, I will encourage them to be expressive of their imaginations in their favorite subjects, whether it will be art, literature, math or music. We all have rules and regulations to follow, and each student will know that there is no exception in the school or the classroom. Another goal in my classroom will be to keep the students excited about learning, not to treat school as a game or a social event, but to encourage a unique and fun atmosphere to learn.
There are many things which make a teacher great and they all can`t be defined. However i`ve always considered several of them essential. In my opinion a good teacher is someonewho first of all creates interest in studying, doesn`t underestimate the children, has equal expectations of siccess from everyone and last but not least likes his job.
...sionate professors who helped shape the type of teacher I would like to be. They found ways to talk to me in a manner that motivated me to want to improve, all while honoring the work that I have already done. I would like to bring this same moral into my classroom, when a child is motivated, passionate, and self-aware of their needs, strengths, and weaknesses, they can and will push themselves to improve. Students do not solely care about how much knowledge an educator has, but they care about how much these educators truly care. We shouldn't judge a person on how educated they are based only on test scores. The most educated person may not be the most suitable person to teach children. I may lack the test scores, however, I do not lack the passion and motivation needed to be a great teacher. If we cannot celebrate small successes, the final outcome is less weighted.
As you enter the red bricked school building on the first day, you do not know who your teacher will be. It could be a tall, old, young or nasty woman or man. But you always try to make yourselves presentable, since the first impression is always the last. Some students come, sit with their heads down, and speak nothing for the period. Others just disperse in the back posting pictures on instagram of their first day of school. However the not so ordinary student introduces themselves, tells the class what they did over the summer, and starts asking teacher questions even before the teacher has taught the lesson. They stand out from the rest. By the end of the day, the teacher has already figured out who the “perfect student” is.
