I feel it is important for educators and administrators to develop good habits of character, such as self-respect, generosity, good temper, and sincerity to name a few. Since good habits of character are developed in our youth, adults are responsible for instilling values in the young. It is important that teachers and administrators promote and maintain a high level of competence and integrity in practicing their profession. Without good habits of character, it would be impossible to teach effectively or lead. Teachers must make good judgments when it comes to instructional methods and curricula, so it is important for administrators to employ educators who have good habits of character and try to develop others through professional development.

To maximize learning, an educator needs to understand each individual as much as possible. Today with increasing diversity in the classroom, teaching can be a very complex activity. Not only must educators recognize and respond to each student’s educational needs, but also understand the cultural and family values. Diversity can be enriching and be responsible for making students flourish. All students benefit from diversity because students learn tolerance and the ability to accept differences in others. As an educator, I am astounded at the ever increasing diversity of the student body. As an administrator, I would stress to all teachers in the school that lesson plans need to be modified to accommodate the diversity of all students. Educators should align expectations with the students because there are a variety of teaching and learning styles to accommodate. The message that teaching matters and that the teachers are supported by administration and the community is a must. Reaching out to the community and inviting involvement in planning educational programs is a must. It is a huge job to support all teachers, so an administrator needs to have leadership teams that are well trained. Special education administration has become more demanding than ever. The country’s attention has been focused on improving the quality of education with administration carrying most of the burden. I think creative leadership that is of a high quality is important for reforming and restructuring education, and this cannot be done without values such as integrity, honesty, sincerity, and generosity.
