“You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.” These are the words of God to Adam and Eve. A seemingly simple notion that Adam and Eve contravened after hearing the serpent’s persuasive appeal for power and godlike knowledge.

After eating the apple, Adam and Eve were no longer in the state of innocence or a state of moral neutrality. They were able to now perceive the goods and evils of the world upon eating the apple. Their knowledge of good and evil were evident to God when he saw Adam and Eve’s consciousness of their naked selves. As I said, Adam and Eve were in the state of moral neutrality during their period in Paradise. They did not know what was truly good and bad except the fact that they were not supposed to eat from the tree God specified. In a metaphorical sense, Adam and Eve were like children. Adam and Eve had body of adults but a moral sense of 3 year old kids. Adam and Eve had a small moral foundation and only knew that it was bad to eat from the tree of knowledge. But why would God want to keep Adam and Eve in a state of ignorance? Isn’t knowledge a good thing? To me , God seems like the overprotective parent who did not want his children to learn about the realities of the world. He probably knew that Adam and Eve will disobey his control if they had the ability to access moral knowledge. This proves God to not be trusting others. He had to put Adam and Eve to a test to prove their obedience to him. The transition of Adam and Eve can be delineated from 3 year old child to a 17 year old going through puberty, and God did not want his creations to question his control making Adam and Eve lacking in moral judgement. This is a question that no one can answer but God alone. But one thing clearly inferred from the bible is the disappointment God felt when he discovered that Adam and Eve disobeyed his orders. As it says in Genesis, “Then the Lord God said, ‘See the man has become like one of us knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life.” ( Genesis 3:22).
