Global Problems
Global problems affect the modern world. Today’s rapid changes have made countries more interdependent than ever before, shrinking the world into a global village. As the world grows smaller, events in any one area have a greater impact on other parts of the world. National borders do not limit the effects of pollution or environmental destruction. Even poverty in some areas affects other areas because of migration and its impact on the world economy. Three examples of global problems that affect the modern world are famine, pollution, and terrorism.
Only few countries are able to produce more food than their citizens need. For the rest of the world, hunger and malnutrition are common. In developing nations, about 150 million children under the age of five go to bed hungry each night. Climate changes and erosion have worsened the problem in some places like Somalia. Moreover, each advance in producing more food is often met with a corresponding increase in population.
Terrorism can be defined as the use of violence against civilians for political purposes. It draws attention to a group’s grievances and is used to frighten governments into making concessions. Many radical groups use terrorism. The IRA, for example, used terrorism against the British in an attempt to unify Ireland. In the 196o’s and 1970’s the PLO used terrorism against Israel, seeing it as self defense against what they considered “Israeli terrorism,” the occupation of Palestinian lands. The governments of Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Libya not only helped the Palestinian terrorists, but also used terrorism to silence their own opponents. Terrorist organizations have made use of the following tactics: taking hostages, bombing and political assassinations.
Industrial growth is often accompanied by an increase in the amount of pollutants released into the air. They cause such problems as acid rain and increase the number of people suffering from respiratory illnesses. Another serious threat to our environment is the destruction of the ozone layer, which protects the earth from the harmful effects of the sun’s radiation. Also, increased carbon dioxide emissions and pollutants in the atmosphere appear to be making the earth warmer.
Many analysts, researchers, and professors have tried to define the purpose of terrorism. Some believe that can only be achieved when we know how the mind of a terrorist works. The Encyclopedia Britannica describes terrorism as, “The systematic use of violence or threat of violence by organized groups to achieve specific goals. Terrorist activities may be directed against individuals, organizations or governments. Terrorism is employed by radical groups to obtain concessions from established governments, such as a change in policies unfavorable to them or the release of imprisoned members of their organizations…” (Encyclopedia Britannica. “Terrorism” 1987 T-169)
Terrorism could be defined as the use of violence in order to accomplish some type of political coercion, usually premeditated and against innocent people. When an act of terror occurs it affects nations near and far. The Popular front for the Liberation of Palestine is no different than any other terrorist organization that exists today. The organization that has been in existence for over 45 years still instills domestic fear in people and recognized around by governments as a serious threat.
In conclusion, hunger is a constant, chronic pain distressing many children. Famished children should have become a thing of the past a long time ago. The thought may seem impossible, but the world produces enough food to feed everyone. In the world as a whole, per capita food availability has risen from about 2220 kcal/person/day in the early 1960s to 2790 kcal/person/day in 2006-08, while developing countries also recorded a leap (2015 World Hunger and Poverty Facts and
According to a few world hunger organizations, the five main causes of hunger in the third world are natural disasters, war, the poverty trap, agricultural infrastructure and over-exploitation of resources. Natural disasters such as droughts, floods and storms cause crops to be destroyed or peop...
The correlation between over-population and growing world hunger has become a controversial topic in today’s society. Concerns of population expansion, world starvation, and environment destruction are matters of debate and are of much concern for their outcomes affect everyone of society. The world is home to an estimated 6 billion people with more than 80 million additions every year. With this astonishing growing rate of population it is necessary to address the matter of world hunger before it is too late. The three main theories of world population and the correlation to world hunger are debatable; however, it is ultimately left to an individual to determine the truth/ answer to such theories of world hungers origin.
World hunger is one among many problems faced in this world today. About twenty-four thousand children under five die every day. Even though there is a lot of food in the world, some people in the world cannot reach these foods because they are poor. About one tenth of the world population is suffering from chronic hunger every year. Because of the hunger problem, majority of the people suffer from blindness, anemia, malnutrition related problems and other diseases because they are not getting enough
The U.S. Department of State defines terrorism as, “The calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological”. Whereas the Belgium Red Cross says that terrorism is committed “for the purpose of intimidating the population, forcing a third party to act or destablishing or destroying the fundamental structures of a country or of an international organization”.
In the past ten years the world population exceeded six billion people with most of the growth occurring in the poorest, least developed countries in the world. The rapidly increasing population and the quickly declining amount of land are relative and the rate at which hunger is increasing rises with each passing year. We cannot afford to continue to expand our world population at such an alarming rate, for already we are suffering the consequences. Hunger has been a problem for our world for thousands of years. But now that we have the technology and knowledge to stamp it out, time is running short.
The word terrorism was first used during the French Revolution from the reign of terror inflicted by the French from 1784-1804 ("International Affairs"). It was used to describe the violent acts perpetrated on the French that inflicted terror on the various peoples and instilled fear within them. However, at the time it had a more positive connotation than the term that instills fear today. During the French Revolution this was because it referred to state-sponsored terrorism in order to show the need of state instead of anarchy, sometimes promoted by other groups (Hoffman 2). Therefore, even though terrorism has taken a new nature, terrorism can refer to official governments or guerrilla groups operating outside national governments ("International Affairs"). In order to encompass terrorism’s various sectors and explain it to the public, in both positive and negative aspects, many analysts have tried to put it into a few words. Terrorism is a method used by tightly of loosely organized groups operation within states or international territories that are systematic in using deliberate acts of violence or threats in order to instill...
Terrorism has many forms, and many definitions. “Elements from the American definitional model define terrorism as a premeditated and unlawful act in which groups or agents of some principal engage in a threatened or actual use o...
Terrorism is one of the most extensively discussed issues of our time and at the same time it is also one of the least understood. The term itself “terrorism” means many different things to different people, cultures, and races. As a result, trying to define or classify terrorism with one universal definition is nearly impossible. The definition of terrorism used in this research is a reflection of much of the Western and American way of defining it. The definition of terrorism is,
Famine has struck parts of Africa several times during the 20th century, and to this day is still going strong. According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, the average African consumes 2300 kcal/day, less than the global average of 2700 kcal/day. Recent figures estimate that 316 million Africans, or approximately 35 percent of the continent's total population, is undernourished. Although hunger in Africa is hardly new, it now occurs in a world that has more than enough food to feed all its citizens. Moreover, while Africa's population is growing rapidly, it still has ample fertile land for growing food. Hunger therefore reflects not absolute food scarcity but rather people's lack of access to resources—whether at the individual, house-hold, comunity, or national leve that are needed to produce or purchase adequate food supplies. The reasons people cannot obtain enough food are: several different historical patterns of in equality. These patterns include the in equalities between Africa and its former colonisers or contemporary financiers, and between Africa's rich and poor. It also includes in equality between members of the same households, where food and the resources needed to obtain it (such as land and income) are often unevenly distributed between men and women, old and young. Whatever the reasons for food deprivation, when the result is malnutrition it can do damage, increasing diseases such as malaria, rickets, anemia, and perhaps acquired immune deficiency syndrome aka AIDS Mal-nourished children suffer stunted growth and, often, learning problems. Malnourished adults have less energy to work. Over the long term, inadequate nourishment can cast communities into a cycle o...
One of the most complex issues in the world today concerns human population. The number of people living off the earth’s resources and stressing its ecosystem has doubled in just forty years. In 1960 there were 3 billion of us; today there are 6 billion. We have no idea what maximum number of people the earth will support. Therefore, the very first question that comes into people’s mind is that are there enough food for all of us in the future? There is no answer for that. Food shortage has become a serious problem among many countries around the world. There are many different reasons why people are starving all over the world. The lack of economic justice and water shortages are just merely two examples out of them all.
The global issues are problems that affect almost all people around the world except a very small percentage of the world. These small groups of people usually have the power and money to control almost everything. The global issues are so enormous that individual countries cannot
Even thou there is enough food to eat, but most people cannot afford because of poverty. Scientific research proves that every person needs roughly over 2000 calories in their body a day to obtain a normal healthy body (healthy eating). Individual affected by hunger and poverty suffers normal body function, physically or mentally which harm their abilities in their future. According to the recent Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) statistic, "most of the world 's hungry people live in developing nations. Hunger is approximately distributed among people as follows:578 million people in Asia and the Pacific, 239 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa,53 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean,37 million men and women in the Near East and North Africa. That compared to 19 million people in developed countries." Almost 50 to 75 percent of hunger in most African countries by the war that destroys most of the country 's natural resources; Somalia and D.R Congo are examples of
