Global health and public health are population-based and are considered similar and sometimes interchangeable because the goal of each are focused on quality of life, improving health and lifespan by focusing on reducing health. Each have an emphasis on poor populations but the primary distinctions which make them unique are global health transcend national boundaries, with a focus on prevention and clinical care, striving for equity among nations, and public health is community or country specific, focusing on prevention and both are interdisciplinary. Global healthcare issues are defined as areas that can be improved by research and the dedication of the research, taking the responsibility and leadership in order to analyze and find better outcomes for a better heather system and revolution. Often in practice, we as nurses deal with a variety of diseases and treatments and often have to react to the illness that the patient presents with upon our interaction. While this is an essential piece of our practice, we also have a duty to our patients to be proactive in preventing specific health-related consequences based on their risk factors and to promote their health and well being. Health promotion as it relates to nursing is about us empowering our patients to increase their control over their lives and well beings and includes: focusing on their health not just illness, empowering our patients, recognizing that health involves many dimensions and is also effected by factors outside of their control (Whitehead et al. 2008)..
While the moral backing for public health in its current state may be sound, what many researchers fail to understand is that the many moral failings of its predecessors that color the legacy of public health internationally and at home. Medical care deals with the individual patient, while public health takes the community and populations into consideration. With advanced technology, nursing is more connected and interdependent. The nursing professional unit is able to lobby to both local and international community organizations on behalf of the African community from anywhere in the world. Funding and education are necessary for this well needed community in order to assist in a caring and positive manner to combat their diagnosis of diabetes or related symptoms. It is fair to say that, for these goals to be achieved, it will take the effort of health care workers namely medical doctors, nurse practitioners and nurses. According to Zaccagnini and White (2014), "Nursing leadership is essential in implementing, and evaluating clinical preventions and interventions". DNP graduates in corporation with local and national organizations have disease outbreak surveillances in place. The National Nosocomial Infecting Surveillance System (NNIS) is one such program. This program was created by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in 1970. According to, Culver, Horan, Jarvis, White, Olson, Banenjee, Edwards, Martone, Gaynes & Hughes, (1991) the CDC uses the data to monitor trends in infections and risk factors.
