For this essay I will be writing on the prompt “invent an “art backstory” for three objects, events, or other phenomena that were previously not categorized as art”. The pieces I will be writing back stories on are “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Johannes Vermeer, “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt, and “Cafe Terrace at Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. The first piece I will be writing about is “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. The backstory on this piece is complicated. The girl in the painting is the artist's ex lover. She is a blonde, small, 23 year old young lady. She was born in Germany, but her family moved to France when she was only 3 years old. Her name is Adelene. She met the artist when she was only 16. Their romance was forbidden because he was 24 years old. The big age gap was looked down upon by not only her family, but their small town as well. None of that stopped their love from blossoming. She was his muse. One dark and rainy night she was driving home with him, when suddenly the car was struck. Her memory was completely ruined. Every memory she had with him was lost and he knew he couldn’t see her again. He had to leave her alone and keep their love a secret to himself. The backstory on this piece is quite simple. A man and woman fell in love when they were really young. Their love started out on fire. They were in the “honeymoon” phase for years. Suddenly, all that started to change. The woman began to feel suffocated by the man’s love. She wanted to escape. She no longer felt the passion and desire for him that she once had. This is depicted in the painting by the man straining his neck to kiss her while she pulls away and looks uncomfortable. After all they had been through she felt trapped in their relationship and like she couldn’t get out. This is represented by the blanket in the painting that is wrapped around and confining
