Susanna’s disorder can be analyzed from all psychological perspectives. The psychodynamic perspective is a school of thought that focuses on how helping behavior springs from unconscious drives and conflicts. Susanna’s conflict from years ago with her family will continue to affect her behavior until it is resolved. The social cultural point of view is a school of thought that focuses on how thinking or behavior changes in different situations or as a result of cultural influences. Behavior seen in this disorder has been connected with adolescents and young adults with identity problems whether it be social pressures, anxiety provoking choices, or conflicts about sexual identity. Interestingly, the book is much more realistic whereas the movie added more drama to entertain. However, there are strengths and weaknesses in the movie. Much of the movie’s details were unrealistic. The girls in the hospital had way too much freedom. For instance, in a real hospital they would never be able to hide medicine because they do tongue checks. They would have 24 hour supervision and would never be able to sneak out or be alone with male visitors. A psychologist would never sleep during a session with a patient and the doctors and nurses would never say invalidating things to patients either. On the other hand, I do believe that it is good depiction of the thoughts someone has with the disorder and portrays the spectrum and stigma of mental health. It also shows society’s view on mental illness because her parents didn’t want their friends to know where she really was. The depiction of the atmosphere in the hospital was very accurate and it shows there isn’t much privacy. The movie does manage to convey the reality that the main character, Susanna does indeed move along in her journey from vulnerable fear to self-awareness. It really tries to change the stigma of mental illness by putting crazy and normal on the same level showing that everyone is a little crazy it’s just a matter of how much you act on it.
