Giovanni de Verrazzano was the first European to sight the New York Harbor, Narragansett Bay, and Block Island. He sailed to America with four ships in 1524. He died do to cannibalistic natives.
Giovanni da Verrazzano was the child of Piero Andrea di Bernardo da Verrazzano and Fiammetta in 1485 near Val di Grave, Italy. He had one sibling Gerolamo da Verrazzano. He began exploring at a very young age. His first trip was to Egypt and Syria. Between 1507 and 1508 he traveled to France and met King Francis I. He also came in reach with some of the members of the French Navy. He began a career in maritime along this time.

All of them did not make it to the New World. The men first spotted land which today is known as Cape Fear, North Carolina after 50 days at sea. He then went south down to the tip of Florida and without losing sight of the coastline he traveled back up north. April 17, 1524, he ended up in the Bay of New York. He stayed in Manhattan until the storm sailed him into Martha's vineyard. He then went to Newport, Rhode Island and stayed there for 15 days he came in contact with many of the Native Americans. He then returned back to France . In 1527 he came back to Brazil which is in South America for logwood and he returned back to France. In 1528 He took 3 ships and sailed back to Florida and turned around and started heading towards the islands. As they were going they seen a Caribbean Island that looked deserted as if no one lived there. So they decided to drop the anchor and see what it was all about. Verrazzano took a small boat and rowed it to shore. When he stepped on to the beach he was a victim to cannibalistic Natives who were known as Caribs. They ate him while his brother watched from the ship and couldn’t do anything about
