I ate at expensive restaurants, wherein I couldn’t afford yet when I was still in college. Tried a number of food varieties for my own pleasure. For starters, this I found this already rewarding since I got to eat something better than anything I ate when I was still in student budget. I didn’t mind spending over the top just for the quality of food, which I chose to reward myself after a month’s worth of heavy labour. how-to-cook-healthy-meals-at-home Now that I’ve thought of it, everything that I’ve spent for the last few years only went into nowhere. It seems silly to think of saving up by eating at home, right? However, when I came to think about it seriously, I realized that it’s actually true! Though it could be a little tempting when I discover new restaurants and eat out for a while, I actually saved more than a half of my usual eating expenditures for quite some time. I learned to cook the simpler version of the restaurant recipes at home while sharing it with the entire family for a way lesser amount than at the diners. Backpacking during …show more content…
I recalled my overspending habits using the debit cards or ATM cards, and I felt my spirits dropped. This is when I started to leave them at home for the fear of using them again impulsively. I began to achieve the things written in my financial goal list little by little through this simple act, and it made me feel motivated again to keep saving. For quite some time, I only bring enough cash when going to the mall to avoid buying unnecessary stuffs. Keep a Short List to Buy I never listened to my family whenever they tell me to list down what I need to buy when going to the mall or even the grocery. I mean, I’m not old enough to forget what I needed to be done by the end of the day. Turns out, I get to buy things way out of my budget during grocery shopping since I tend pick up everything useful for our household. images (3) The next week, I went to the grocery again with my short goal list on my hand. Before I know it, I managed to get everything listed there for a short span of time. Also, I noticed that I’ve bought only the necessary stuffs and not the not-so-important stuffs from the
There has been controversy about whether fast food is easier on the pocket than eating home-cooked meals. Take McDonald’s for instance, they’re notorious for their convenient and affordable dollar-value menus. Since you can get a burger for just $1.19, feeding a family of four should be inexpensive, right? Mark Bittman, author of “Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?” argues otherwise. He claims that fast food is not at all cheaper than buying a few groceries and cooking at home.
Extreme shoppers get a thrill out of buying more than they would be able to otherwise because of the savings they obtain from their bargains. Lyz Lenz wanted to test using coupons vs. using a bargain store. She created a shopping list of groceries needed for the week. At the bargain store she spent $103.16 sticking strictly to her list and only buying what the family needed for the week. At the local store using coupons she s...
By being constrained to only a certain amount of money made me more cautious about the quantity of products that I was buying and what brand the products were. By budgeting it made me realize that going to big name grocery stores isn’t always the most ideal option, such as Walmart and Meijer tend to be more expensive where Family Fare and Aldi’s are fairly more on the cheaper side when it comes down to prices. I realized that shopping at Family Fare and Aldi’s is more convenient for people to shop at when trying to save money and way more affordable while on a budget. While being constrained it made me find out how much cheaper the off brand products are rather than the name brand ones, which is surprisingly different when the product is basically
Forty-eight percent of individuals who cooked dinner six to seven times a week consumed 2,164 calories, 81 grams of fat and 119 grams of sugar daily. They were also able to conclude that those who consumed home-cooked meals depend less on frozen foods and are less likely to choose fast foods. However, as explained in, “Tasting food, tasting freedom: excursions into eating, culture, and the past” Sidney Mintz explains in chapter eight that the majority of Americans often choose to eat out at fast food joints because of the convenience of these meals. Mintz states that these meals are usually diets, “high in animal protein, salts, fats, and processed sugars, low in fresh fruits and vegetables, drinking more soda than tap water.” This is where cultural, and social aspects create conflict when attempting to switch to this healthier lifestyle (although it is feasible). Depending on an individual’s schedule, it will either be an easier switch to make home-cooked meals, or just another difficult task to accomplish throughout the
Starting college, getting your fist job and receiving your first pay check is the start the independence and adulthood. Those first feelings are pivotal. How to forget the day you received your first pay check. The magical feeling of independence, leadership and adulthood are unforgettable. My first pay check is probably the only exact amount of money I will forever remember. The anxiety of not knowing the exact amount you earned, yet knowing what you will be spending it on amazing. Receiving my first pay check is such a pivotal moment for me because for the first time I felt independent, proud and satisfied.
What I mean by this, is during family social gatherings food was always main focus. Even if you’re not hungry, you have to eat to celebrate the occasion because the food was cooked in big batches. Another example that poses issue for me, is having something to do when meeting with friends. Usually, there aren’t many choices other than setting a date to go out to eat and drink. I find myself overindulging on restaurant meals that are usually high in calories just to spend time with a friend. I am thankful that food availability and convenience has never been an issue in my household. With that said, I have a large family so my parents always stretched the dollar on food. It was more about quantity over quality on food items. This meant the generic sugar filled brands and savory junk food. Our go to “vegetable” was ice berg lettuce. Vegetables were too expensive to throw away because we were picky
With these three scenarios, I have learned several things about making a personal budget. I learned how to research the economic situation and best predict the prices for certain things. I also learned how best to manage bills under a tight and a very free budget. I learned how to manage money, not just for myself, but for others that I may one day be responsible for.
Eating out is not always a convenient option, or even the best option. Cooking at home
People eat food every day without thinking twice about it, because it is a necessity for us to live. How often do you think about what is in the foods that you eat? How many calories does it have? Are there any vitamins and minerals in it? Is it high in fat? For most of us and especially college students who live a busy life on the go, the answer to that question is probably no. Since becoming a recent graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania Academy of Culinary Arts, I have been more interested in food and what people are eating. Also since more young Americans are becoming obese I want to find out what they are eating and where. Going to college and seeing how students have poor eating habits I want to find out why they are eating this way. Is it because they are away from home for the first time? Or is it because that is the only food that is available for them? I also want to find out if students would eat healthier if it was provided for them? My hypothesis is that students eat unhealthy because it is more convenient for them. There is usually no time to cook a homemade meal and most college students are always in a hurry so it is easier to pick up takeout. Also most college students don’t know how to cook. I also believe that most college students don’t care if the food is unhealthy for them, as long as it tastes good. Hopefully, in the following pages I will uncover the wide world of college eating.
When a family eats at home they, will pay less than restaurants because when they buy food from the market they buy for better quality and a better price.

People think that the price of fast food is cheaper than a home-cooked meal. Although many people like to eat fast food because of it is inexpensive and tasty, the actual price of the fast food is not exactly same like the menu. The price of fast food sounds affordable, but actually it is quite expensive. This is because people are influenced by the fast food restaurant’s advertisement. It illustrates the price of a set of fast food is affordable compared to cooking at home. When people go to the fast food outlet, they realize the price at the bill is not as same as the advertisement stated. The price is even higher than the price stated at the advertisement. Although the fast food advertisement provides the information that the price of fast food is low, the price in the advertisement does not include the tax and tips. On the other hand, cooking at home is much cheaper than eating fast food. It is always affordable, healthier and more emotional fulfillment when eating at home and cooking ingredients compare to eating out (Warner, 2015). The people only need to buy the ingredients and cook it by our own.It is always affordable because people only need to pay ingredients and cook it at home. There are no tax and extra tips! If people prepare their food in large quantities at home, it is more economical than buy several sets of fast food. According to Yeager (2010), “A family that commits to eating at home can save $3000 in one year and eat just as well,” (p. 52). Save and
And you can do one of my favorite things which is making a grocery list. Doing this helps you from buying multiples of an item that you already have at home not unless you like to stock up on items to prevent from going shopping frequently. Yes, driving to get take-out can be a quick fix when you’re pressed for time. It can be much faster to cook something at home, especially when you plan ahead. There are so many recipes that can be researched made in less than 30 minutes. And if you choose a more difficult recipe, you can always save the leftovers for
In conclusion always think about how to spend your money rather than how to earn. Be cautions of products and think of how much you want to spend on a specific product always asses what you need and this of how to refrain from impulse buying. If you balance out your spending and savings saving money would definitely get easier. Saving money is being able to control and know how to spend your money wisely.
My freshmen year when I lived in a dorm and all my food was prepared for me, I ate pretty well. I made sure to have a balanced diet and to eat a lot of nutritious foods as opposed to processed foods. However, now that I live in an apartment and am entirely in charge of cooking my own meals, my eating habits aren’t great. I tend to buy a lot of canned or microwavable meals that are quick, easy, and cheap to make. That is what stood out to me most on the days I recorded; how much I eat simply because it’s cheap and convenient. Although I have a lot of room
