Russia is the largest country by land mass in the world. It was one of the biggest Super Powers of the world. Once an ally of the United States during World War I and World War II, it become our greatest enemy for over forty years, becoming the Cold War. Its Government has been a Monarchy, Communism, and is currently a Democracy. Its people have survived the harsh winters, multiple invasion attempts and their own Government. In 1989, the Russian economy collapsed and so did its government, since then it has rebuilt to again become a world Super Power.

Russia is the largest country in the world as far as land mass. With over 6,500,000 square miles, it is almost twice the size of Canada, the next largest country in the world. It has over 23,000 miles of coastline that touch the Arctic and Pacific Oceans and the Baltic, Black and Caspian Seas. It shares land borders with fourteen countries and separated by bodies of water with three more countries including the United States. Most of Russia is plain and low hills, with heavy forests in the north and mountains in the south. Russia’s highest point is Mount Elbrus in the Caucasus mountain range along its southern border. The country has 100,000 rivers; with the Volga River is the longest and most famous in a historical sense. Russia’s major natural resources consist of petroleum, coal, natural gas and timber. It has deserts, mountains, deep forests and Arctic tundra. Russia’s winters are severe and unforgiving, so unforgiving that the winters alone have saved Russia from multiple invasion attempts from European armies, trying to invade from the West.
