This quote is a prime example of how African Americans are expected not to strive and go farther in their education. The white substitute expected more of the white students than the black kids in regards of their education. The low expectation of blacks are shown in the movie Precious because Mary is single mother and she is uneducated and struggling.
Furthermore, the main character of the movie Precious, is another example of how the media stereotype black women. Precious is physically and mentally abused by her mother, raped by her farther, and dropped out of school because of her pregnancy. This reinforces the stereotypes that are seen as less ambitious because black teens grow up in a rough household and are likely to drop out of school at an early age and this also talks about the stereotypes and expectations of blacks as they get older in age. Miss Rain is a teacher at the alternative school that Precious attends and she helps Precious by teaching her how to read and write and eventually helps her relocate and find a place. Because of Precious poor family structure she sees Miss Rain as someone she can look up to because her parents are not there for her. Agustin Fuentes displays similar portrays of racial stereotypes in his essay “From The Myth Of Race". For example, Fuentes explains that having a lighter skin tone means you will make more money “Light-skinned immigrants in the United States make more money on average than those with darker complexion, and with chief reason appears to be discrimination”(Fuentes 529). This is a great example of how race still exist in the United States, and that lighter skinned tone people have a distinct advantage in the job process and also there is a preference for light skinned over
