In health class, we learn that all humans are different. But one thing we have in common is the need for a substance call electrolytes. Electrolytes are critical to the body’s function and help maintain muscle performance, heart rates and activity. When I think of Electrolytes I think of sports drinks like Gatorade. Want to know who drinks Gatorade? Derek Jeter, Michael Jordan, Cam Newton, and Dwayne Wade! As I watched Gatorade Commercials from the 80s, 90s, and Today, I observed that star athletes that endorse Gatorade Commercials have the whole commercial centered on them. That’s when a spark lit and I started asking questions such as, “What benefits do sports drink have over water or juices?”, “What exactly electrolytes are and how many are in sports drinks?” As a curious 12 year old, I started researching on sports drinks. I discovered electrolytes include potassium, sodium, calcium, and other elements too. As a person perspires he/she loses water and electrolytes in the body. Loss of electrolytes can lead to heat exhaustion, nausea, and other conditions. I continued my research. I decided that I had to educate myself further about Gatorade. I observed that since the end of 2012, Gatorade’s sales are 3.3 Billion Dollars. Furthermore, Gatorade has many products such as drinks, powders, energy chews, and even energy bars. Gatorade drinks are put into five categories; Original, Frost, Fierce, Low Calorie, and Endurance. Original Gatorade has seventeen flavors. The other categories have about five flavors each. Not surprisingly, Gatorade has plenty of competitors, including PowerAde. We assembled the Electrolyte Challenge Kit. Some things we did to assemble the kit were, connect two wires to the multi-meter, attach alligator clips to each other, and we also wrapped copper wire around a straw. The Electrolyte Challenge Kit has the job of determining how many amps of energy are in each drink. We later used this information in the formula, E= A ÷ V or Electrolytes Equal Amps Divided by Volts, to determine how many electrolytes are in each drink.
