Galileo, Kepler, and Newton were among the thinkers responsible for a shift in scientific understanding. Before science in Europe did little without reliance on the church, but these thinkers set the stage for a new scientific pattern that separated the physical from the spiritual and set out to learn the natural laws that govern the physical world. Each of these men, through their varying pursuits, helped Europe to envision a world that was necessarily godless, but could operate automatically under constant natural laws.

Galileo, was praised for his use of the telescope, propagated with his own observations and measurements and the copernican model of the Heliocentric system of the universe. This was a direct opposition to Ptolemy's geocentric model, which was supposed by the church, because Earth was naturally assumed to be placed in the center of the universe to show God's priority. He proposed 3 laws. The first law states that the orbits of the planets are ellipses. The reason why Kelper's first law is important because is gets rid of the idea that the heavenly bodies flow in perfect circles. While in the second law he states that as a planet moves around its orbits, it sweeps out equal area in equal time. His second law is important to note because it abandons the ancient Greek belief that the planets have to move at a constant uniform speed. Sometimes a planet goes faster, sometimes a planets goes slower thus, voiding the idea of a perfect uniform motion. Addtionally, he discovered that the more distant a planets orbit the sun at slower speeds. This was demostrated through the relationship that period squared is equal to the semi-major axis
