Ever since I was a little girl, I have always dreamed of having a job where I can help people. After doing research throughout my twelve years of school I stubbled across the occupation of a registered nurse and I realized that is the ideal career for me. While researching registered nurses, I determined that anyone can try and become a registered nurse, but it requires a tremendous amount of hard work. This future job will require me to have a great education, extraordinary communication, listening, and personal management skills. As a registered nurse the pay is more than ideal, and it would provide me with the lifestyle I would want to live. This occupation would also give me the chance to work anywhere I want, such as close to home or somewhere in a different state. Being able to help people that are injured, that cannot care for themselves, or are less fortunate are the primary job requirements of a registered nurse. When researching my career I did not want to find out what my potential career was because I did not want to come across an occupation that I would not enjoy. I was also afraid I would not find a job that I was qualified for, or that made enough money to sustain me. As I started becoming more and more involved in the research process and the investigation, I came across the career of a registered nurse. Fall semester of 2016 I completed a career trajectory project in nursing school that prompted me to assess my future career goals deeper than ever before. Following up on that project I had the opportunity to interview a nurse who has taken the career path I hope to go down. My purpose for this interview was to gain further insight into the my choice career path, and see if it truly was something I was interested in or not what I expected. The questions asked were aimed at uncovering perspectives unknown to me. In this paper I will be discussing why I chose the nurse for the interview, the main points of the interview, and my biggest take aways from what I learned.
I have always had a passion for nursing. As a child, I watched my mother getting up early, putting her scrubs on and headed out the door for a 12 hour shift. She was always content, and at ease to go for a long shift and even overtime at times. I love the fact that after work, she would always come home, satisfied with the day no matter how hard it was for her. She would sit and tell my brothers and sisters how she enjoyed the conversations that she had with her patients and what impact she had on their lives that day. Listening to these stories as a child, I knew that I wanted to become a nurse and listening to the same stories and helping people, making their day feel better. I wanted to follow my mom’s footsteps. At the end of a long shift, it is a rewarding profession, knowing that I am saving people’s lives, making them comfortable when they are near of dying, advocate and teaching them. My future career goal is to be either a homicide detective or a criminal profiler. Now, you are probably thinking that I don’t need a higher education that I just need to go into the police academy and work my way up the chain, you are wrong. In order to be a criminal profiler I need to get a four year degree in psychology, criminal justice, or forensics. It is also recommended to get a masters in forensic psychology, or criminology after spending 7-15 years as a detective, police officer, or investigator.

Throughout the beginning of high school I've always had the desire to become a registered nurse. Then at the beginning of senior year of high school I changed to dental hygiene. I ended up at Pacific University extremely excited about dental hygiene. Prior to freshman year of college I did not get a chance to observe a dental working environment. As a student in middle it is very important that I start to look to the future. One of the biggest obstacles in life is finding a job that I am content with or even enjoy. All college students should partake in career exploration project because it gives structure and direction. The result from an assessment identifies and prioritizes which careers will best suit an individual person or student. It does not necessarily mean they have to pick that particular job or career; it gives them more chooses to choose from. Career exploration is a life long journey that is emotionally, physically and mentally stress full. I say lifelong because as time goes on so does an individual’s views, abilities and skills.
