Literary Essay #1 In the short story “From a Secret Sorrow”, by Van De Zee the author depicts the protagonist Faye as a weak character. In the short story Faye loves Kai, but is afraid that what she has been hiding from him may make him not want to marry her. By analyzing the characters through a present lens, we can see how Faye is a weak character by her not telling the truth as soon as she heard the news, by thinking Kai wouldn’t love and marry her, and Faye stealing Kai’s car and running away from her guilt. First, Faye didn’t come clean about the news to Kai as soon as Dr. Martin told her, and referenced her to Dr. Jaworski’s to help with the depression she encounters. In the text it states “He reached in the breast pocket of his shirt, took out a slip of paper, and held it out for her to see. One glance and Faye recognized it as the note from Doctor Martin with Doctor Jaworski’s name scrawled on it, thickly underlined”(100). Kai found out over the phone that Dr. Jaworski was a physiatrist. Faye refuses to tell Kai why she is seeing a physiatrist because she believes she has let him down tremendously. She knew that her secret was something that Kai desired, but she chooses to keep it to herself and wait till last minute to tell her lover or future husband Kai. Faye also chooses not to accept that Kai still loves her and wants to marry her, because she thinks deep down he doesn’t mean what he is saying. Finally, Van Der Zee uses irony when Faye and Kai realize they can adopt, and have children of their own. When Marie tries to ask the protagonist to take a walk, this action shows that she is trying to achieve Pauline’s dream by getting her outside of the house. Therefore, she could finally feel the true meaning of freedom. Nevertheless, Pauline’s mother’s response demonstrates that she wants her daughter’s safety more than anything. The mother tries to keep Pauline away from the danger, so the protagonist can at last have a healthier life. However, Agathe’s reply shows that her mother is willing to sacrifice Pauline’s dream to keep her secure. Therefore, the author uses contrasting characters to mention that safety is more valuable. Furthermore, the protagonist starts to describe Tante Marie and reveals that she always has her hair “around her shoulder” (85). When Pauline describes Marie, Pauline shows how her Tante is open-minded. In fact, Marie helps Pauline to let go of her limitations and to get a taste of her dream. Therefore, Marie always wants Pauline to go outside and play hockey or even to take a walk. These actions that Pauline’s Tante takes show how she is determinate to make Pauline’s dream come true. Faye, like many inhabitants of the novel, seems helplessly focused on the sordid history of her family and the poison that seems to infect their very souls. She is obsessed to the point of madness and this poison is best described by Jasmine when she comes upon Faye the morning of Faye’s decision to create order out of the chaos that has been her life.
The hardships of the need of acceptance from others makes peoples lives complicated and confusing. These hardships affect people differently and each person deals with hardships in different ways. The decisions people make due to hardships can change who they are as a person. Jean Howarth examines the idea of responses to hardship in her short story, “The Novitiate”. She writes about a girl who must go through the hardship of choosing between her brother and her morals. The author utilizes character development to suggest that the need of acceptance can cause people to make difficult decisions in hardships, which can lead to a person breaking their own morals for the satisfaction of others.
In the movie “Diary of a Black Woman”, Helen is a dark complected woman who is very fancy and classy. Helen is a pretty well mannered woman , dressed neatly. Helen has every dollar wished for in the world but yet, does not own a bit of happiness even if desired. In the short story “Sucker,” Carson McCullers conveys the message about how a loss of innocence can change not only one’s behavior, but also one’s relationships with others. Many short story writers have written about the gender and role of woman in society. Some of these stories express what Barbara Walter calls, “The Cult of True Womanhood” meaning the separation of both man and woman in social, political and economic spheres. In order to be considered a “true woman” woman were to abide by the set of standards that were given to her. Women were expected to live by the four main principal virtues - piety, purity, submissiveness, and domestication. In Kate Chopin’s short story, “The Storm,” Calixta the main female character breaks away from “The Cult of True Womanhood” when she has a sexual encounter with her past lover Alcée. The storm goes through many twists and turns that tie with their adulterous actions. Although she breaks away from the four main principal virtues, she in the end is considered to be pure innocent of heart because the action in which occurred happened instantly, and as white as she was, she was taken away from her innocence.
Infant Sorrow by William Blake is about the birth of a child into a dangerous world. The meaning behind this poem is that when a baby is born, they are entering a place that is unfamiliar to them and is full of hazardous circumstances and then seeks for safety and comfort by sulking on the mother's breast. Instead of blatantly telling the reader, Blake uses several poetic devices to deliver the meaning of Infant Sorrow. Some of the devices he uses are images, sound, figurative language, and the structure to bring out the meaning of his poem.
