Literary Essay #1 In the short story “From a Secret Sorrow”, by Van De Zee the author depicts the protagonist Faye as a weak character. In the short story Faye loves Kai, but is afraid that what she has been hiding from him may make him not want to marry her. By analyzing the characters through a present lens, we can see how Faye is a weak character by her not telling the truth as soon as she heard the news, by thinking Kai wouldn’t love and marry her, and Faye stealing Kai’s car and running away from her guilt. First, Faye didn’t come clean about the news to Kai as soon as Dr. Martin told her, and referenced her to Dr. Jaworski’s to help with the depression she encounters. In the text it states “He reached in the breast pocket of his shirt, took out a slip of paper, and held it out for her to see. One glance and Faye recognized it as the note from Doctor Martin with Doctor Jaworski’s name scrawled on it, thickly underlined”(100). Kai found out over the phone that Dr. Jaworski was a physiatrist. Faye refuses to tell Kai why she is seeing a physiatrist because she believes she has let him down tremendously. She knew that her secret was something that Kai desired, but she chooses to keep it to herself and wait till last minute to tell her lover or future husband Kai. Faye also chooses not to accept that Kai still loves her and wants to marry her, because she thinks deep down he doesn’t mean what he is saying. Finally, Van Der Zee uses irony when Faye and Kai realize they can adopt, and have children of their own. From my perspective Faye attempts to please everyone, only hurting herself in the end making her a weak
