The free will defense of the presence of moral evil is that it is logically possible that God could have created a world with creatures that always did the right (good) thing, never harmed anyone or anything and did no wrong. But, these creatures are not free to do as they will, existing like robots. It is far better to have a world of creatures that are significantly free, that generally perform more good acts than evil acts. Although this is superior to not having free will, God cannot make creatures only do good, nor can God stop creatures from doing evil. So, when humans use free will to perform evil, it is an act done free of God’s will and goodness. This is the source of moral evil, the overt decision (use of free will) to commit sin

For example, we probably believe that we freely chose to do the tasks and thoughts that come to us making us doing the task. We have a will, but our will is not free because it necessarily seeks our well-being and self-preservation.” For example, if was extremely thirsty and came upon a fountain of water but you knew that the water was poisonous. If I refrain from drinking the water, that is because of the strength of my desire to avoid drinking the poisonous water. If I was too drink the water, it was because I presented my desire of the water by having the water overpowering me for overseeing the poison within the water. Whether I drink or refrain from the water, my action are the reason of the out coming and effect of the motion I take next. Holbach concludes that every human action that is take like everything occurring in nature, “is necessary consequences of cause, visible or concealed, that are forced to act according to their proper nature.” (pg. 269)

    My claim that we have evil in this world because of our libertarian freedom does not fully answer the notion of “the problem of evil”. Saying we have evil in this world is just like saying we have bad decisions in this world. Bad decisions just like evil do not have a form. Davis argues that free will is the answer to the problem of evil. This is consistent with my view that evil exists because of our libertarian freedom. Unlike Hick, Davis is consistent with my answer for evil and he is also consistent with how evil is solved in regards to heaven and hell. Davis states, “I do believe hell exists, but I do not hold that it is a place where protesting people are led against their will to be tortured vengefully. I believe that the people who will end up separated from God freely choose hell and would be unhappy in God’s presence.
