My name Francesco Ricci and I am a man who was born on August 24, 1894, in Sicily, Italy. I am an only child, and throughout my childhood, I have lived a poor life. I’m grateful for my father and mother who worked hard as farmers to maintain me. However, there came a time when taxes rose and wages lowered, and droughts occurred, and disease spread, when this happened my parents suffered from unemployment and struggled to obtain basic necessities such as water, food, and shelter for them and me. They realized that Italy isn’t a suitable place, so they planned to migrate to the United States at Ellis Island in hope to work as a farmer and for economic opportunities. Immigrants were held for long periods of time before they could get into America. People who had to send here were Steerages, a lower class, they had been “named” by the medical exams “E” for eye trouble, “K” for hernia, “L” for lameness, “X for mental defects, “H” for heart disease, Mary Gordon, 1987. In the other hand, Angel Island and Ellis Island had many differences between them. Ellis Island was in the East coast, Upper New York Bay. In additional, Ellis Island was a castle garden, and it was used for immigrants from Europe. “Immigrants could pass through Ellis Island in mere hours, though for some the process took days”, May Gordon, 1987. The immigrants who passed Ellis Island had been treated by terrible things such as “stolen their names and chalked their weaknesses in public on their clothing” Marry Gordon, 1987. Immigrants who had to go to the Angel Island was treated worse. They would be separated men from women and children at the moment they had arrived. Then they had to do the medical exams which required undressing in front of strangers. If they fail the test for various diseases they would be deported immediately. After all of the examinations, the immigrants did not pass through yet, they would wait in a detention dormitory and a bunk until the interrogation process, and this process took a few days to months. Immigration has existed around the world for centuries, decades, and included hundreds of cultures. Tired of poverty, a lack of opportunities, unequal treatment, political corruption, and lacking any choice, many decided to emigrate from their country of birth to seek new opportunities and a new and better life in another country, to settle a future for their families, to work hard and earn a place in life. As the nation of the opportunities, land of the dreams, and because of its foundation of a better, more equal world for all, the United States of America has been a point of hope for many of those people. A lot of nationals around the world have ended their research for a place to call home in the United States of America. By analyzing primary sources and the secondary sources to back up the information, one could find out about what Chinese, Italians, Swedish, and Vietnamese immigrants have experienced in the United States in different time periods from 1865 to 1990.
When the school day came to an end, I would feel a nervous sensation as I waited to see if one of parents was standing on the other side of the school gate. From the conversations I heard amongst adults to the news I saw on TV, I knew that the possibility of never seeing my parents again existed. No one gave me a clear explanation of what was currently happening, but I was aware of one thing -- what the term “deportation” meant.
From the years 1880 to the early 1900’s immigrants from Italy began to find their way to the new land in America. But why did they choose to move and why did they choose here? Opposition to the fascist rule of Benito Mussolini was one major cause of the great number of Italians leaving Italy. Other reasons were that poverty, overpopulation, and natural disaster all spurred in Italy in the late 1800’s. Also the illiteracy rate in southern Italy was nearly 70 percent, about 10 times as high as Germany, France and England in the late 1800’s. There was a lack of cultivatable land and of industrial resources such as coal and iron. Also they had a lack of modern agricultural technology, therefor the 80% of Italians who relied on farming for their income fell to poverty when there farms became insufficient. There was also a disease, Phylloxera, which spread and killed many vineyards. Natural disasters destroyed many families’ lives in Italy including volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and massive tidal waves. In Italy, a worker could make between $2 and $8 for 6 days of work, while in other countries such as the United States they could make around $20 or more a week.

The peasants in the deprived, southern area of Italy and the island of Sicily had little hope of upgrading their lives. Many diseases and natural disasters spread through the area. On top of this, Italy's crumbling government was in no state to come to its people's aid. Word that life in America was soon spreading across the land, and more and more Italians found it difficult to resist the thought of a new and more prosperous life. Italian immigrants began piling in to Ellis Island in New York to take their first steps on U.S. soil in search for a new beginning (The Library of Congress, 2004).
The 1920s was an important time period in American history. With this being said, many important events took place that changed the course of history. One of these events that is still taught all around the world is the Sacco and Vanzetti case. Sacco and Vanzetti were Italian born anarchist who moved to the United States during the 1920s. During this time, immigrants and anarchists were subjected to the most suspicion. Sacco and Vanzetti were convicted and sentenced to death for the murders of a paymaster and his bodyguard, along with the robbery of more than $15,000. There was little evidence to prove their guilt, most of the evidence was circimsrtancal. Many around the world believe that Sacco and Vanzetti were convicted based on the fact that they were anarchist and immigrants. This event happens almost a hundred years ago, but even in today's society, innocent people are convicted for crimes they did not commit and immigrants still are subjected to suspicion in

Andreas Vesalius was well known for his dissections in the 1500’s. Growing up in Brussels he was captivated by the anatomy of animals. Throughout his childhood Andreas dissected many small animals trying to uncover life’s mystery. This curiosity regarding anatomy came very naturally, due to the fact that he was born into a family of physicians. Vesalius started his formal education at the University of Louvain; then traveled to Paris to continue his studies in medicine. During his life time, Vesalius was an accomplished physician, and professor of anatomy. He also received his degree as a doctor of medicine at the age of twenty-two. Vesalius writings and teachings set the foundation of anatomy we know today, hence why he received the title; founder of modern anatomy.
In his book “American Passage: The History of Ellis Island”, Vincent J. Cannato expressed the course that the late 1800s to 1900s immigrants went through. The main focus of Cannato’s book was the many changes in the immigration policy, and how it shaped the United States. Before Ellis Island opened, the restriction of immigrants was weak. Many Americans had their own beliefs on how immigration should be managed, however, restrictions towards immigration was not enforced until the early 1900s. When the immigration policy was finally imposed, the treatment of immigrants became harsh and unsympathetic. Vincent J. When my family and I got in the plane that would take us to the U.S., I was very excited. It was as if I had butterflies in my stomach. I was also nervous because I had heard of people that were turned away when they got to America because the government was not letting as many immigrants into the U.S as they had in the past. Therefore, my whole family was a little anxious. Two things could happen when we arrived at the Washington, D.C., airport. We could either come to the United States to chase after “the American dream”, or we could be turned away which meant that we would have to return to our country of origin.

As the sunlight gleamed through my bedroom window bright and early on Sunday, May 15, 1892, I layed in my bed thinking what it would be like if i could move anywhere i wanted too. Little did i know that today would be the day that I would go to Ellis Island and become an American citizen. All I had ever wanted was for my family to live in a society that it didn’t matter whether or not you were a Jew, or a gypsy, or even a homosexual, I wanted my family to live in a place where it didn’t matter what religion you were and it didn’t matter if you had blonde hair, nor blue eyes. My family would be riding middle class on the steamboat that took us to Ellis Island, the trip overall would take about three days plus a day to get to the steamboat. Those poor 3rd class people had to walk the entire time and didn’t get a break or anything! They were trudging through the snow in old clothes and torn slippers, their feet must have been icicles. A day later we arrived at a doc that had a vast steamboat almost hovering over all of us. We had to pack all of our luggage into a port on the boat and then we had to go find a house to stay in because we wouldn’t depart for the next two days.
