It is said there is no harder job in the world than being a parent, and we couldn’t agree more! Finding permanent foster placements for children living with ongoing medical conditions or a disability in Cambodia is challenging. In developing countries, many families lack the resources to be able to care for a child with high needs. Unfortunately, children are often placed into institutional care such as an orphanage due to a lack of resources and social services to support families to adequately care for their own children. Kim has been a foster parent with CCT since 2009 and she is currently caring for five children in their home with her husband Nhel. “I am happy to work with kids, when no one else will take care of them I will be their caregiver to give them warmth and love”, she says. Makara*’s story is one which shows how resilient the human spirit is. As a toddler he came to CCT and couldn’t walk, was very unwell and required hospitalisation for a variety of medical issues. During these tough times foster mum Kim has given Makara her unconditional love and has been there to help him through. From reading him bedtime stories to sing-along sessions, to doing stimulating activities to engage his young mind and training with a physiotherapist to learn exercises which can be done at home to improve Makara’s range of movement and his physical development. Now at seven years old, he is a joyous little boy with a gentle and caring nature.
