Forensic Science Personal Statement

Every since I was a little child, I knew I wanted to do something to help people. I grew up in St. Louis, and always saw crimes on the news when my parents would watch. As I grew older, my interests changed and I began to lean towards the science aspect of school. There was no specific science that I loved more than the other, and I excelled in that area a lot more than I did in other subjects like history. As most people at the time, I was a huge fan of all of the CSI shows as well as The First 48 and Forensic Files. Investigation really interested me, but since I was still young, I never really thought anything of it other than that they were good TV shows. As I got into high school, it became obvious that I was better at certain sciences and not all of them. When I took my first real chemistry class my sophomore year, I noticed that I was fairly good at it and it fascinated me. I knew at that point that when I went off to college, I was going to pursue something in the chemistry field. As I got into my senior year, I knew I needed to begin looking at what type of chemistry degree I wanted to receive so I could pick a great college to go to. As I was searching around, I came across the degree of Forensic Chemistry, and it seemed like a perfect fit. This school was a good choice for me because I am currently in a top five accredited forensic chemistry program and have learned so much over the last three and a half years. Attending the University of Mississippi has given me the opportunity to be in a lab setting and experience first hand what it is like to perform experiments and test substances. I have also received the opportunity to research the effects of marijuana on the renal system and will begin this coming spring
