Without rules, all civilization would quickly dive into chaos. There would be nothing protecting us from one another’s most basic actions. In societies there has to be a guideline--something that regulates the conduct of people toward each other. The conduct between people in a society is better due to the extent of rules. There are rules throughout everything that we do in life. From not driving through an intersection when the light is red, to not allowing a child to eat candy past 9:00 PM. Most of the time, we automatically abide by them.
Rules are important in multiple ways. Rules are a part of the everyday human life and we find them in schools, the workplace, and in general society. Rules are guidelines. They help people to understand what is acceptable and what is not. Without rules, the world would, more than likely, be chaotic. In any type of society, there always has to be some type of guidelines that set standards for how people act towards each other.
Without the rules we have today, we would be living in a type of anarchy. A free for all. It would be a society where every one could just do as they pleased without having to worry about any type of consequences. Back in my high school days, a friend of mine asked me a simple question which shut down my thought process completely. The question was, ‘What is stopping us from punching the next person that says something?’ Paused for a while looking around the class for a logical answer. After several blinks off to space I responded values. The answer of values literally came out of the blue. For a well educated guess I was not too far off. Politically speaking norms are the reason we chose whether to do something or not, with a combination of values of course. Norms are defined as shared rules of conduct that specify what people ought or ought not do in specific settings. Everyday people violate many norms both knowingly and unknowingly. For example:
Society needs norms. Norms are unwritten rules that make life predictable. We have been trained to know these rules and what society recognizes as acceptable and unacceptable behaviors (Remle, Functionalism, 2016). When we act in an unexpected way, one of these norms is violated, society reacts, and sanctions are imposed. These sanctions can be positive or negative, formal or informal (Remle, Labeling Deviance, 2016).
Social norms are important because they define the nature of a group, clarify relationships among members, and express values. They are also important because they create cohesion within the society, and members of that society are very aware when such norms are violated. Effective teachers make sure that every student has a job so that they feel responsible. These activities can also be used to reward improved behavior (Evertson, Emmer, and Worsham, 2006). Jones describes routines as operational rules. Jones says, “Operational rules must be specified to provide for smooth operations, which include materials to use, when to sharpen pencils, get a drink, go to the bathroom, how to get help and how the class is dismissed” (Allen, 1998). An effective way of establishing routines would be considering each and every minute detail of classroom activities. Children should know the importance of rules and routines in the classroom and it is a teacher’s responsibility to teach them (Canter &Canter, 1992).
Teaching classroom rules and procedures will contribute to a safe and secure environment for students. Classroom rules should be the same for everyone, however, like I mentioned above there are exceptions to be made on an individual basis. All interactions within the classroom should be positive.
